i bought minecraft java edition today for my laptop and im trying to play, the issue is everytime i try i only get taken to the demo version. Ive searched up multiple times what to do, logged out and re logged in, and nothing seems to help. Ive also tried using both the old and current launchers, still doesnt work. Ive looked at multiple tips and nothing is working. I also know i did buy java as it says i own it, as well as i am certain im logging in with the right account. When i first tried to play, it said to choose a username for java, so i did. Is it because the username is different from my bedrock or microsoft username that its not working? I just dont know what i messed up.

    Hello stanley stannerson,

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum.

May I know if you have checked the AI assistant answer yet? If you did, may I know how it goes?

Before we proceed further, can you please go to account.microsoft.com/billing/orders and find the order history of the purchase? If possible, please send me a photo of it so I can check for you. Before posting, please remember to remove the order number and the timestamp, as well as other personal information.

    I'm waiting for your reply.

Different Java, Bedrock, and Microsoft usernames do not cause Minecraft Java Edition to be stuck in demo mode. The issue is almost always that the Java license is attached to a different Microsoft account than the one currently signed into the Minecraft Launcher.

    Use these checks and steps:

    1. Confirm which Microsoft account owns Minecraft Java
      • Open every email account used in the past and search for receipts from Microsoft for the Minecraft Java purchase (for example, “Minecraft”, “Microsoft Store”, or “order confirmation”).
      • The email address that received the purchase receipt is the Microsoft account that actually owns the Java license.
      • If Bedrock was bought on Xbox or another device, the Xbox gamertag may be tied to a different Microsoft email than expected. Use the guidance for finding the Microsoft email behind an Xbox gamertag to verify the correct account.
    2. Make sure the Minecraft Launcher is using that exact Microsoft account
      • Sign out of the Minecraft Launcher completely.
      • Sign back in using the Microsoft account email that received the Minecraft Java purchase receipt.
      • After sign‑in, check the Java Edition tab again. If the correct account is in use, it should show “Play” instead of only offering the demo.
    3. If the correct account cannot be accessed
      • If the purchase email shows an account that can no longer be signed into (for example, it was changed or compromised), follow the official Microsoft account recovery guidance to regain access. Without access to the owning Microsoft account, the launcher will only show demo for Java.
    4. If the launcher still shows demo after confirming the right account
      • Gather the purchase information (order email, date, and account details) and contact Minecraft Support so they can check the license on the Microsoft account and correct any mismatch.

The Java username chosen when first launching Java Edition can be different from the Bedrock gamertag or Microsoft account name without causing demo‑only behavior; the key factor is which Microsoft account owns the license.
