No longer seeing messages that arrived before today

Somehow, Outlook has stopped showing me any of my emails in or out, prior to today. I'm using my paid subscription of MicroSoft Outlook for Mac, Version 16.107.1 (26031524).

Help!

    Hi Nancy Wilson,

Welcome to the Microsoft Q&A forum.

I understand how alarming this can be, especially when emails appear to disappear suddenly. Based on what you described and the version you are using, this behavior in New Outlook for Mac is usually related to view or sync behavior, not permanent message loss.

Please go through the checks below carefully, in this order:

1, Check that no view or date filter is applied

In New Outlook for Mac, filters can limit the message list to only recent items.

    • Open the affected folder (for example, Inbox or Sent).
    • Select Filter near the top of the message list.
    • Make sure it is set to All (not Today, Unread, or any date‑based option).
    • Also confirm the folder is sorted by Date (descending), not grouped.

2, Use Search to confirm older mail still exists

This helps determine whether the messages are hidden or unsynced.

    • Use the Search box and enter a keyword, sender, or subject from an older email.
    • If older messages appear in search results, this confirms the data is still present but not currently displayed in the main view.

3, Verify behavior in Outlook on the web

New Outlook for Mac does not always cache the full mailbox history locally.

    • Sign in at https://outlook.com using the same account.
    • Check whether emails from before today are visible there.
    • If they appear on the web, this further confirms the messages are not deleted.

4, Restart Outlook and allow time for sync

    • Quit Outlook completely.
    • Reopen it and leave the app open for several minutes without switching folders.
    • Avoid searching or applying filters during this time so the view can refresh.

5, Temporarily switch to Legacy Outlook for Mac (if available)

This can help confirm whether the issue is specific to New Outlook for Mac.

    • In Outlook, look for the option to switch to Legacy Outlook.
    • Check whether older messages appear there.
    • You can switch back afterward; this step is only for comparison.

If the messages do not appear on Outlook on the web either, or if search returns no older items at all, the next step would be to Contact - Microsoft Supportdirectly so they can review the account’s sync state.

I hope this helps clarify what is happening and guides you to the right next step. Please try these steps and let me know how it works.
