Microsoft accounts cannot be merged, and deleting or closing an account requires the ability to sign in to that specific account.
For the account where the password and sign-in are no longer available:
- Try to recover access first using the standard account recovery options (password reset, security info, etc.). If recovery fails and sign-in is not possible, the account cannot be directly deleted.
- If the account has been inactive for more than two years, it may already have been automatically deleted and can no longer be reopened or managed.
- If the account is still active but inaccessible and is being billed for subscriptions, cancellation generally must be done by the account owner. If ownership cannot be proven, cancellation should be done through the payment provider (bank/credit card) by disputing or blocking recurring charges.
- If the goal is to stop confusion between two accounts that share the same email address, rename or change aliases on the account that is accessible, and use that one going forward. Accounts themselves still remain separate and cannot be combined.
If the inaccessible account is a duplicate created with the same email address (for example, a work/school vs personal account conflict), contact the relevant organization’s IT or support to remove or adjust that work/school identity if applicable.
