my product id for Word 2019 is not working when I try to install on my new computer

My product id is only 20 characters long instead of the 25 that it's requiring. Any ideas on how to get it to work?

    Hi Mark,

Microsoft product keys are always 25 characters (5x5 format), so a 20-character code is invalid. It’s likely a Product ID or reference number, which can’t activate Office.

    For Office 2019:

    • If you bought it retail, you should have received a 25-character product key (often via email or card).
    • If it was already activated, it may be linked to your Microsoft account. You don’t need a key; sign in with the same account used during setup and download/install Office from your account dashboard.

To proceed, go to https://account.microsoft.com/services, sign in, and check if Office 2019 appears. If not, locate the original 25-character key, as the 20-character code won’t work for activation.

A 20‑character code is not a valid Office product key. Office 2019 uses a 25‑character product key, and that is the only format that can be used to install or activate Office.

    Common issues to check:

    1. Confirm it is a product key, not a product ID
      • The “Product ID” shown inside Office (for example in Account → About) is not the same as the 25‑character product key and cannot be used to install or activate Office on a new computer.
    2. Make sure the key is for the correct product and version
      • Office product keys are not interchangeable between versions or between individual apps and suites. For example, a key for an earlier Office version or for a different edition (like just Word) cannot be used to install Office Home & Student 2019.
    3. Check for mistyped or missing characters
      • A valid key must have 25 characters. If the card, email, or label only shows 20 characters, or some characters are unreadable or missing, the key is incomplete and will not work.

If there is no way to obtain the full 25‑character product key (for example, the original key card, email, or packaging is lost or damaged), the key cannot be used to activate Office on the new computer. In that case, contact the seller for help or a refund, and if necessary purchase a new Office license.
