The phone number option shown in the Xbox/Microsoft Rewards flow is different from the newer Microsoft account security options, which is why only Add email appears on the account page.
From the current documentation:
- For Microsoft account sign-in and security verification, phone numbers can no longer be added as a new way to verify sign-in; only email, authenticator app, or passkey are supported.
- VOIP numbers are not allowed for sign-in or verification.
However, Microsoft Rewards/Xbox point redemption still requires a non-VoIP mobile or landline number for phone verification and enforces limits:
- A maximum of 6 Microsoft Rewards accounts per household can share the same phone number.
- VoIP numbers are not permitted for Rewards redemption.
- If too many unsuccessful verification attempts were made, it may be necessary to wait 48 hours before trying again.
Because the standard account page now only shows Add email and not Add phone number, the usual path to add a phone for sign-in will not appear. To redeem Xbox/Microsoft Rewards points instead:
- Make sure the number used is a mobile or landline, not VoIP.
- Ensure the number is not already used on more than 6 Rewards accounts.
- If there were multiple failed attempts, wait 48 hours and try redemption again.
- Confirm that redemption is being attempted from the same country/region as the Microsoft account and that no VPN/proxy is in use.
If the redemption page still insists on adding a phone number but does not present a working option, use the Microsoft Rewards dashboard and follow the redemption flow directly there, as that flow handles the phone verification for Rewards separately from the general account security methods.
