Hi All

I am trying to find some guidence from Microsoft to be clear on whether Dynamically Expanding Disks can be used in production VMs when we have a multi node Server 2016 Hyper V CLuster in operation. We also use Storage Spaces Direct.

I would also be interested to see any articles from microsoft that mention it in terms of reliability, performance, advantages/disadvantages etc

thanks for any help

    Hello

    Thank you for your question.

Fixed size - ...Fixed disk images can be considered wasteful in terms of storage, because the can contain large amounts of empty space, but they are efficient from a performance standpoint, because there is no over head due to dynamic expansion and less fragmentation of the file"

Dynamically Expanding - .....Dynamically expanding disks are initially conservative of disk space, but their continual growth can cause them to be highly fragmented, negatively affecting performance

Below is reference article from Microsoft.
