Trouble connecting Azure App Service and Azure SQL Database in a QuickBooks Online integration

I am trying to connect an Azure App Service application to an Azure SQL Database as part of an integration with QuickBooks Online.

The QuickBooks side appears to be set up, but my application is not successfully transferring data between QuickBooks Online and Azure SQL Database.

I would appreciate guidance on troubleshooting the Azure side of this setup.

Thank you for reaching us regarding the issue where an Azure App Service is not successfully transferring data to/from an Azure SQL Database, even though the QuickBooks Online (QBO) integration appears configured correctly.

Below are the quick troubleshooting steps that you need to check:

Firewall fix (most common):
Azure SQL Server > Networking > Firewalls and virtual networks > Turn ON "Allow Azure services and resources to access this server". Save > Restart App Service.

Verify the Azure SQL connection string in App Service
Ensure the App Service is using a valid and complete Azure SQL connection string:

Server name must be fully qualified: servername.database.windows.net

Port 1433 must be used

Encrypt=True is required for Azure SQL

Authentication type must match your setup (SQL auth or Microsoft Entra ID)

You can validate this in App Service > Configuration > Connection strings. An incorrect server name, missing encryption, or mismatched authentication type is a common cause of connection failures.

Confirm authentication method (recommended: Managed Identity)

If you are using Microsoft Entra ID / Managed Identity (recommended):

Managed Identity must be enabled on the App Service

The identity must exist as a database user in Azure SQL:

Created from EXTERNAL PROVIDER

Granted required roles (for example: db_datareader, db_datawriter)

The connection string must specify Entra authentication (for example, Authentication=Active Directory Default)

Check logs & errors: App Service > Monitoring > Log stream or App Service logs (enable Verbose). Look for firewall (e.g., 40615), login failed, or transient errors (40197/40613) > add retries in code.
