0x20001 Hypervisor Error on Lenovo Thinkpad E16

My Lenovo Thinkpad E16 with Windows 11 is periodically crashing and flashing up an error screen saying that I'm having a Hypervisor Error 0x20001. Is there a common fix for this issue? It has an AMD Ryzen 5 7535U processor and AMD Radeon Graphics if that information is relevant.

This error is quite a generic error message and doesn't really point out any of the issue. So it is hard to tell a definitive fix for this. If possible, can you please go to C:\Windows\Minidumps to collect the Minidump files for those crashes and provide it to me so I can help you check it more throughly.

In the meantime, please try these quick fix:

Type "Command Prompt" in the search bar and choose "Run as administrator"
Type DISM /Online /Cleanup-image /RestoreHealth and press Enter.
When the scan is done. Type sfc /scannow and press Enter.
Restart your computer when all the scan is done.

Hey Carl-L, I did the quick fix scans and after restarting I am still having the same issue. I sent a link with two of my minidump files in a comment a couple hours ago.

Hey, I took a look at the details you posted, and both of your memory dumps actually point to the same root cause, which makes things a lot clearer. The crash is happening inside the AMD power management driver (amdppm.sys) while Windows is trying to put the CPU into a low power idle state. When that transition fails at the firmware level, Windows throws a Hypervisor Error 0x20001.

Basically, the CPU is being told to enter an idle state and something in the firmware or power management layer isn’t handling it correctly, so the hypervisor crashes instead of a normal driver. This type of failure is almost always related to one of these:

• Outdated or buggy BIOS • Outdated AMD chipset drivers • A Windows update that doesn’t match the current firmware • A power saving feature in BIOS that the CPU isn’t handling well

Since both dumps show the exact same function (HvRequestIdle) and the exact same driver (amdppm.sys), it’s not random and it’s not caused by RAM, GPU, storage, or anything like that. It’s specifically the CPU power management layer.

Here’s the usual fix path for this type of crash:

Update the BIOS to the newest version from Lenovo

Update the AMD chipset drivers (not just GPU drivers)

Install all pending Windows updates

If it still crashes, try disabling aggressive power saving features in BIOS like Cool and Quiet, CPPC, or Global C States just to test stability

If the issue keeps happening even after all that, then it might be a deeper firmware or motherboard problem, but most of the time updating BIOS and chipset drivers fixes this exact error.

I updated my BIOS and chipset drivers and also am on the latest windows 11 update. I couldn't find anything in bios other than CPU power management which was just a toggle switch. Still having the issue. Interestingly enough, I noticed that the issue does not occur when my laptop is plugged in. Thanks for the update. The fact that the crashes only happen when you're on battery is actually a huge clue. Your minidumps were already pointing to amdppm.sys failing during an idle state transition, and that lines up perfectly with what you're seeing now. When you're plugged in, the CPU stays in higher power states, but on battery it tries to drop into deeper low power states, and that's exactly where the driver was crashing in the dumps.

So at this point it's almost definitely a power state issue rather than anything related to RAM, GPU, or storage. Even with the BIOS and chipset drivers updated, the firmware might still be pushing the CPU into a low power state that it can't handle properly.

A couple things you can try next:

• Go into Windows Power Options and set the battery mode to Balanced or even High Performance just to test • In Advanced Power Settings, disable Processor Idle States or set Minimum Processor State to something like 50 percent • If your BIOS has anything like CPPC, Global C States, or Modern Standby, try toggling those off temporarily

Since the issue completely disappears when plugged in, that almost guarantees the crash is happening during a battery‑only power state transition. (feel free to let me know how it goes!)

I found a kind of half-fix for it. In my windows 11 power settings I set the off-battery settings to best performance and that prevents the issue from happening. However, I do notice that when powering on, sometimes the hypervisor error flashes up again before turning back on. Perhaps this has something to do with taking it off the charger and turning it on? For reference, I'm a college student so I have it plugged in back at my dorm and unplug it to go to class.

Regarding your questions, it now only happened when you unplug and power it on once? Does it still happen when you unplug while the power is on? If not, this could be an issue when changing power state.

I'll have to experiment a little more to figure it out. But when I have it shut off and on the charger, when I take it off and power it back on in class it often ends up flashing up the hypervisor error on startup. Not sure if it does it when disconnecting the charging cable while powered on yet.
