It appears that Outlook 365 will not allow syncing of gmail mailboxes unless I set my default browser to be chrome. Is there a way around this?

    Dear Ian Cahoon,

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Q&A forum. I know it’s frustrating when Gmail only adds/syncs in Outlook after you set Chrome as the default browser—I am happy to help you.

    Quick check:

    • When the add/sign‑in fails, what exact message do you see? (Examples: “We weren’t able to set up your Google account with IMAP…”, “The browser or app may not be secure”, or issues with the Google Allow prompt.)

Meanwhile, please also try these steps:

    A) Classic Outlook for Windows — refresh Google consent and cached sign‑in

    • Close Outlook.
    • In a browser, go to your Google Account > Security > Third‑party access and remove Microsoft apps & services/Outlook access.
    • Open Control Panel > Credential Manager > Windows Credentials. Under Generic Credentials, remove entries starting with MicrosoftOffice16_Data:OAUTH2 (repeat for any duplicates).
    • Reopen Outlook and add the Gmail account from File > Add Account (this works better than adding via Control Panel > Mail for Google sign‑in).
    • See:  Unable to add a Gmail account to classic Outlook - Microsoft Support

    B) If the Google “Allow” button is greyed out or unresponsive

    C) If you’re connecting Gmail in Outlook.com (web) instead of the desktop app

    • In Gmail settings, make sure IMAP is enabled and key labels/folders are set to Show in IMAP before reconnecting.

Please let me know if you need any further assistance. Hope the steps help. Have a lovely day !

Outlook 365 does not require Chrome as the default browser to add or sync a Gmail account. Issues seen during Gmail sign‑in are tied to specific Outlook builds and browser integration, not a hard requirement for Chrome.

Depending on the exact symptom, use the following supported approaches instead of changing the default browser to Chrome:

    1. Update Outlook to a fixed build
Several Gmail sign‑in issues are resolved in newer Outlook builds that open a separate browser window for Google authentication.
    • For classic Outlook sign‑in errors such as:
      • “The browser or app may not be secure.”
      • “We weren’t able to set up your Google account with IMAP. You may need to make changes to your Gmail settings.” Update to a build that includes the fix (for example, Current Channel Version 2404 Build 17531.10000 or later as documented). Once on a fixed build, Outlook uses the system browser securely without requiring Chrome.
    1. Use the Retry flow if Gmail permissions were set incorrectly
If Gmail was added but does not sync and errors like POP/IMAP logon failures or 0x800CCC0E appear, the cause can be missing the required Gmail permission:
    • During Google sign‑in, the box must be checked for:
      • “Read, compose, send, and permanently delete all your email from Gmail.”
    • Starting with Current Channel Version 2412 Build 18324.20168, Outlook provides a Retry link on the error dialog that re‑opens the browser sign‑in so this permission can be granted correctly, again using the system browser (no Chrome requirement).
    1. Workarounds when on older builds
If updating Outlook is not immediately possible and the Gmail add flow fails in the embedded browser:
    • For the older issue where the Allow button for “Microsoft Apps & Services” is greyed out:
      • Reboot the machine and try adding the Gmail account again, or
      • Temporarily switch the default browser to another supported browser (for example, Edge instead of Chrome, or Chrome instead of Edge/Internet Explorer), complete the Gmail add process, then switch the default browser back. This is a workaround, not a requirement to use Chrome permanently.
    • For the older “Sorry, we could not sign you in to Google – IMAP” error:
      • Enable optional connected experiences in File > Office Account > Account Privacy > Manage Settings, restart Outlook, and then add the Gmail account again.

These fixes and workarounds allow adding and syncing Gmail in Outlook 365 while keeping any supported browser (such as Edge) as the default; Chrome is not mandatory.
