Dear Ian Cahoon,
Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Q&A forum. I know it’s frustrating when Gmail only adds/syncs in Outlook after you set Chrome as the default browser—I am happy to help you.
Quick check:
- When the add/sign‑in fails, what exact message do you see? (Examples: “We weren’t able to set up your Google account with IMAP…”, “The browser or app may not be secure”, or issues with the Google Allow prompt.)
Meanwhile, please also try these steps:
A) Classic Outlook for Windows — refresh Google consent and cached sign‑in
- Close Outlook.
- In a browser, go to your Google Account > Security > Third‑party access and remove Microsoft apps & services/Outlook access.
- Open Control Panel > Credential Manager > Windows Credentials. Under Generic Credentials, remove entries starting with MicrosoftOffice16_Data:OAUTH2 (repeat for any duplicates).
- Reopen Outlook and add the Gmail account from File > Add Account (this works better than adding via Control Panel > Mail for Google sign‑in).
- See: Unable to add a Gmail account to classic Outlook - Microsoft Support
B) If the Google “Allow” button is greyed out or unresponsive
- Reduce page zoom to 100%, scroll through the permissions list, then try Allow again.
- Try a different browser in the sign‑in flow (Edge/Chrome), or clear the mobile/desktop browser cache for Google/Microsoft sign‑in pages.
- Temporarily turn off content blockers or tracking‑prevention extensions and retry.
- See Unable to add a Gmail account to Outlook - Allow button grayed out - Microsoft Support
C) If you’re connecting Gmail in Outlook.com (web) instead of the desktop app
- In Gmail settings, make sure IMAP is enabled and key labels/folders are set to Show in IMAP before reconnecting.
Please let me know if you need any further assistance. Hope the steps help. Have a lovely day !
