Hi, I don't see how you can order a Personal Version and download a Family version. Compare Microsoft Plans (At least I do not think you will be able to convince Microsoft)

    Switch Microsoft between plans

If you are saying that you got a more expensive subscription than you intended to purchase — Microsoft 365 Family instead of Microsoft 365 Personal — you have to cancel the expensive one, meaning 365 Family in this case. Sign in to your account at https://account.microsoft.com/services , find the subscription, turn off recurring billing (if it is currently enabled) and then cancel. At a later stage, you can order a new Microsoft 365 Personal subscription.

    Hi, Alice Younger

I’m sorry you’re dealing with that. If the Family plan and Defender were bought directly from Microsoft, the best first step is to sign in to Services & subscriptions, open each subscription, and cancel it, because Microsoft checks refund eligibility during the cancellation process itself, and not every cancellation gets a refund.

For the Family-to-Personal price difference, the refund decision is usually handled through that same billing flow, so please check what refund option appears after cancellation.

If no refund option shows up, it is recommended that you contact Microsoft Support and choose Microsoft 365 and Office > Manage account subscription, since the community forum cannot issue refunds directly.

Thank you for your patience in reading, I hope this information has been helpful to you.
