Hi Golden retriever,
Thanks for your detailed post. I understand how frustrating this is when the device suddenly becomes inaccessible and shows “The referenced account is currently locked out and may not be logged on to”. Have you already tried the Q&A Assist suggestions? In addition, please try the following.
Before suggesting further recovery steps, I need to confirm the following so we don’t risk data loss:
- Are you signing in with a personal Microsoft account (Outlook.com / Hotmail / Live), not a work or school account?
- On the sign‑in screen, are you explicitly choosing “Sign‑in options” > Password, or is Windows defaulting to PIN?
- Have you already left the device powered on and idle for at least 30 minutes without attempting to sign in again?
Please reply with these details before proceeding.
Also, please note:
- Do not repeatedly reboot and retry sign‑in
- Do not keep reinstalling Windows (this will not clear an account lockout)
The lockout is time‑based and security‑driven.
