To move to a cheaper Microsoft 365 plan and speak with a live Microsoft agent, follow these steps:

    1. Check and change the subscription (self-service)
      1. Go to the Microsoft account page for subscriptions (sign in with the account that is being billed).
      2. Open Services & subscriptions.
      3. Locate Microsoft 365 Family.
      4. Use Manage to:
      5. After cancellation or turning off auto-renew, a lower-cost plan such as Microsoft 365 Basic or Microsoft 365 Personal can be purchased instead.
    2. Contact Microsoft Billing Support (chat or call back) Since direct account access is required to review billing and help switch plans, contact Microsoft support:
      1. Go to https://support.microsoft.com/contactus/ and sign in with the account that owns the subscription.
      2. In the search box, type “Chat with an agent” and press Enter.
      3. Select Contact support.
      4. Choose Products and services.
      5. Select Microsoft 365 & Office (or similar Microsoft 365 category).
      6. For the category, choose Billing and payment or Manage my subscription.
      7. Confirm, then choose Chat with a support agent in your web browser or Call me back.
      The agent can:
      • Confirm what subscription is active (Family vs. other plans).
      • Help cancel or downgrade to a cheaper plan that fits single-user needs.
      • Review whether any refund options apply according to the subscription’s status.
    3. If charged incorrectly or more than expected
      • For unexpected or duplicate charges, use the same support path above and explain that the subscription is for a single user and a cheaper plan is preferred.
      • For refund eligibility and process, see: How to get a refund on a Microsoft subscription.

If the subscription was purchased through a third party (for example, an app store or retailer), cancellation and plan changes must be done through that provider’s billing support, as described in Manage your Microsoft 365 subscription purchased through a third party.
