Hello CDJ,
The downloads for Windows Server installation media are indeed free from Microsoft’s official site, but the product key is what determines whether you can legally activate and use the operating system beyond the evaluation period. Microsoft provides ISO files for anyone to test or evaluate, but without a valid product key the installation will either remain in evaluation mode or eventually become unlicensed.
The key serves two purposes: it activates the OS to remove the evaluation restrictions, and it ensures that you are licensed for the edition you’re running (Standard or Datacenter). Even if you have the ISO, you cannot deploy it in production without a purchased license. That’s why the installer asks for a product key — it’s not about the availability of the software bits, but about compliance and activation.
If you only need to test, you can use the evaluation ISO which runs for 180 days without a key. For production use, you must purchase a license through Microsoft Volume Licensing, CSP partners, or authorized resellers. Once you enter the MAK or KMS key provided with your license, the system activates and is recognized as properly licensed.
I hope you've found something useful here. If it helps you get more insight into the issue, it's appreciated to accept the answer. Should you have more questions, feel free to leave a message. Have a nice day!
