Windows 10 updates can sometimes take a long time, especially on older hardware, slow disks, or slow internet connections. If updates are repeatedly failing and rolling back (“cleaning” for hours), there are supported ways to troubleshoot and also to install feature updates manually.

    1. Basic checks for slow or failing updates
    • Make sure the PC is connected to a stable internet connection and plugged into power.
    • Try installing updates manually:
      • Select Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, then select Check for updates.
    • If updates still fail, run the Windows Update troubleshooter:
      • Select Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot.
      • Under Get up and running, select Windows Update.
    1. Repair possible system file issues If updates are failing, repairing system files can help:
    2. In the search box on the taskbar, type command prompt.
    3. Right‑click it and select Run as administrator.
    4. Run:
      • DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
      • Wait for it to complete successfully.
    5. Then run:
      • sfc /scannow
    6. After both complete, try Windows Update again.
    7. Manually install Windows 10 feature updates Yes, feature updates can be installed manually if automatic updates are unreliable:
    • Go to the Microsoft software download page for Windows 10 and download the Windows Update Assistant.
    • The Windows Update Assistant:
      • Downloads and installs the latest Windows 10 feature update on a compatible PC.
      • Is intended for cases where the device has not received the feature update automatically.
    1. About Windows 11 compatibility
    • If the PC is not appropriate/compatible for Windows 11, it can continue using Windows 10, but note:
      • Support for Windows 10 has ended on October 14, 2025 (or will end on that date, depending on the article version).
      • After that, there are no free security updates from Windows Update.
    • For long‑term security, moving to Windows 11 on a compatible device (or a new device) is recommended.
    1. When updates are extremely slow
    • Long “cleaning up” or rollback phases usually occur when an update fails and Windows restores the previous version. Repeated failures even after the steps above may indicate deeper system issues; in such cases, using the Update Assistant to do a full feature update is often more reliable than relying on normal cumulative updates.
