I have a Microsoft 365 Family Plan. When I first set up the account, I purchased a domain name. After I few years I didn't renew the domain. Now I would like to recover that previous domain name and begin using it. When I try to purchase the domain from third party site, it says the domain in on hold by Microsoft. I tried finding the domain in Microsoft, although get a message that I can't access domains with my account. Is there a way to recover my old domain name or should I just purchase a new domain name?

For a Microsoft 365 Family subscription, domains are not managed in the Microsoft 365 admin center, and domain recovery options are limited.

For Microsoft 365 Family/Personal, personalized email domains in Outlook.com are only supported when the domain is managed by GoDaddy. If the domain was originally purchased from another registrar and is now expired, it must be recovered or repurchased through that registrar (or whoever currently holds it). If the domain is shown as on hold by Microsoft or a Microsoft-related registrar (for example, Wild West Domains/SecureServer), it is still treated as a regular domain registration and is not recoverable through a Family subscription portal.

If the domain is not available for purchase and is on hold, there is no supported path in Microsoft 365 Family to force-release or transfer it. In that case, the practical options are:

    1. Continue checking with the current registrar (or WHOIS information) to see if/when the domain is released and becomes available again.
    2. Choose and purchase a new domain and then use it with Outlook.com personalized email, ensuring it is managed by GoDaddy as required for Microsoft 365 Family/Personal.

If a new domain is purchased and managed by GoDaddy, it can be connected to Outlook.com as a personalized email address as part of the Microsoft 365 Family subscription. At the moment, only GoDaddy-managed domains are supported for this scenario.
