Trouble rejoining the insider program and downloading 26220.8079 on March 20.

Was there a server-side issue with MS preview on or about March 20 or was my inability to rejoin the beta and download 26220.8079 related to my NordVPN install? On March 22 I was able to get back in but not before trying multiple attempts, including uninstall of the VPN, resets of the OS, and return to build 26220.7859.

The behavior around March 20 aligns with a known, server-side issue in the Windows Insider infrastructure rather than being specifically caused by the NordVPN installation.

    From the documented cases:

    • A user on Release Preview reported that their system suddenly started downloading a Beta Channel build despite having been on Release Preview for a long time. The moderator-confirmed workaround involved removing the WindowsSelfHost registry key and clearing C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download, which indicates a backend or configuration issue with Insider channel assignment rather than a local networking/VPN problem.
    • Another user reported that the Release Preview channel itself appeared to be missing. A moderator explicitly confirmed: “We have identified the issue that caused this and are working to resolve, you should now see Release Preview restored.” This confirms there was a server-side/channel configuration issue affecting Insider channels around that time.

These reports show that Insider channel availability and targeting can be affected by Microsoft-side issues, temporarily causing:

    • Wrong channel being offered (e.g., Beta instead of Release Preview).
    • Channels disappearing or not being selectable.
    • Update offers not matching expected builds.

Given that on March 22 it became possible again to rejoin and get the desired build after multiple attempts (including OS resets and VPN removal), and considering the confirmed server-side channel issue, the most consistent explanation is that the difficulty rejoining and getting build 26220.8079 was primarily due to a transient Microsoft-side Insider service/channel problem, not specifically NordVPN.

VPN software can interfere with Windows Update in some scenarios, but the documented, time-correlated Insider channel issues strongly indicate a backend problem was present and being actively fixed by Microsoft.
