I started a Microsoft 365 Business trial. The Cancel Subscription button does not work, and I cannot remove my payment method.

Is this even legal? I cannot cancel my "free" trial subscription and I am not able to remove the payment method, because the subscription is still active.

I have spent over 6 hours today trying to solve this, the AI slop assistant is completely useless, there is no way to connect with a human. What is this ensh*ttification? I want out of this asap.

    Hi,

Thank you for the additional details and the screenshot.

What you are seeing aligns with how Microsoft Entra ID Free is designed to work. This subscription cannot be canceled, as it is automatically included and required for billing and tenant management. It does not generate any charges.

For the same reason, the payment method cannot be removed while the subscription and the billing account are active. While a credit card is required for verification, it is not charged unless paid Azure or Microsoft 365 services are added. If there are no other paid products, there is generally no risk of billing.

For additional details, you may refer to the following resource: Microsoft Entra ID Free - Microsoft Cost Management | Microsoft Learn.

Additionally, if you no longer wish to use the billing account, you may choose to close the billing account by creating a support request in the Azure portal. Microsoft Entra ID Free itself cannot be removed, but Azure Support can assist with closing the billing account when it is no longer needed.

You may follow the steps below if you wish to proceed:

1/ Go to the Azure portal > Create a support request

    User's image

2/ Enter your issue and select go. Then choose the Subscription management option > Next

3/ If prompted, choose Cancel or switch my subscription > Next

    User's image

4/ Scroll down to select Contact support option

5/ Then select Create a support request.

6/ On the New support request page, at step 2 (Recommended solution), system‑generated suggestions will appear. To bypass this step, wait for the recommendations to finish loading until the Return to support request option becomes available. Select Return to support request, then select Next, and follow the remaining steps to complete the ticket creation.

    Hi,

Thank you for reaching out regarding the issue with cancelling your Microsoft 365 Business trial subscription.

To help me better understand the situation, could you confirm whether your Microsoft trial subscription is still within the first 30 days (trial period), or if more than 30 days have already passed?

If the subscription was started less than 30 days ago, you can follow the guidance in this article to cancel the trial subscription: Cancel your Microsoft business subscription in the Microsoft 365 admin center | Microsoft Learn.

If more than 30 days have passed and a charge has already occurred, the most appropriate next step is to contact the Microsoft Billing team by opening a support ticket. They can review the details of your order and confirm whether cancellation or refund options are available based on Microsoft’s policy and the timing of your purchase.

To open a support ticket, you can follow the steps below:

In the Microsoft 365 admin center > Help & support

    User's image

    Turn off Support Assistant

    User's image

After entering your issue, select the blue arrow and scroll down to access the Contact Support option.

For the billing-related request, it may be helpful to clearly reference your intent to cancel and request a refund so the case can be routed efficiently. For example, you could use a ticket title such as:

“Billing Support Request: Cancellation and Refund for Microsoft 365 Business Trial”

After you submit the ticket, a support agent will be assigned to help you with your request.

I hope this information is useful. Thank you for taking the time to raise this question. If you need any further clarification or assistance, please feel free to leave a comment under this post.

If you find my post useful, kindly consider upvoting it. Doing so can assist others in the community who may have similar questions in finding solutions more quickly.

Thank you for your contributions to the forum.

For a Microsoft 365 Business trial, cancellation and payment method behavior depends on how the subscription was set up and what billing account type is in use. The following actions are supported and documented:

    1. Turn off recurring billing for a free trial
    • For Microsoft 365 for business trials, the supported way to stop future charges is to turn off recurring billing.
    • Go to the Microsoft 365 admin center and turn off recurring billing for the trial subscription. When recurring billing is off, the trial automatically expires at the end of the trial period and the payment method is not charged.
    • This is the documented method for canceling a free trial subscription: if recurring billing is off, the trial will end and no charge is made.
    1. Understand why “Cancel subscription” might not be available
    • The options shown depend on the billing account type (MCA vs MOSA) and timing:
      • MCA billing account type:
        • A prorated credit or refund is only available if cancellation occurs within seven days after the start or renewal of the subscription.
        • If more than seven days have passed since start/renewal, the documented option is to turn off recurring billing so the subscription does not renew; access continues until the end of the term.
      • MOSA billing account type:
        • If the subscription has 25 or fewer licenses, it can be canceled online in the Microsoft 365 admin center.
        • If there are more than 25 licenses, the license count must be reduced to 25 or fewer before canceling.
    • If outside the grace period for MCA, the UI may only allow turning off recurring billing instead of immediate cancellation. In that case, the documented path is to edit recurring billing and set it to Off.
    1. Steps to cancel or stop renewal in the admin center (business subscriptions)
    • First, determine the billing account type:
      • Use “Find out what type of billing account you have” as referenced in the documentation.
    • For MCA billing account type:
      1. Go to the Microsoft 365 admin center.
      2. In Simplified view, select Subscriptions; in Dashboard view, go to Billing > Your products.
      3. Select the subscription.
      4. If within the cancellation grace period, select Cancel subscription under Subscription status and complete the flow.
      5. If outside the grace period, use the link in the “Canceling your subscription” pane to edit recurring billing, set it to Off, and save. This prevents renewal and stops future charges at term end.
    • For MOSA billing account type:
      • Use the same Subscriptions / Your products path, then cancel online if license count is 25 or fewer; otherwise reduce licenses first as documented.
    1. Canceling a free trial specifically
    • For a Microsoft 365 for business trial, the documented cancellation method is:
      • Go to the Microsoft 365 admin center and turn off recurring billing for the trial subscription.
      • The trial then automatically expires at the end of the month and the credit card is not charged.
    1. If the portal still does not allow cancellation or recurring billing changes
    • If there is no option to cancel or turn off recurring billing even after checking the correct account and subscription, the documented next step is to contact support:
      • For business subscriptions, use Microsoft 365 admin support as referenced in the documentation when unable to cancel.
    • For personal (non-business) subscriptions, the “Unable to cancel your Microsoft subscription” article recommends:
      • Confirm the subscription was purchased directly from Microsoft (not a third-party retailer, Google Play, or Apple App Store). If it was purchased through a third party, cancellation must be done with that retailer or store.
      • Ensure sign-in is with the same Microsoft account that owns the subscription.
      • Verify there is no overdue balance; if money is owed, cancellation is blocked until payment issues are resolved.
    1. If the account cannot be accessed at all
    • If the subscription is being charged to a payment method but the account cannot be accessed and ownership cannot be proven, the documented community guidance is to either:
      • Follow the formal account ownership/legal process where applicable, or
      • Cancel the recurring charge directly with the bank or card issuer so they stop honoring the recurring payment.

These behaviors (requiring recurring billing to be turned off for trials, limiting cancellation options by billing type and timing, and requiring account access to manage subscriptions) are documented product behaviors.
