My important mails that I pinned and starred disappeared without any reason from my inbox of hotmail. Though its called outlook nowdays.my original is Hotmail. Why it disappeared and how do I get it back? I see so many people complained about it, I wonder if any effective solution found other than look into deleted or archive file folder

    Hi Sharmila S

I understand your important pinned/starred emails disappeared from your Hotmail Inbox around March 21, 2026, and you already checked Deleted and Archive. I am happy to assist you.

When you use Outlook.com Search with All folders, do the missing emails appear in results? Also, is your Inbox currently in Conversation view (grouped) or individual messages?

I look forward to hearing from you. Have a lovely day!

Pinned or starred messages in Outlook.com (Hotmail) can disappear from the Inbox view for several common reasons, even though they are not actually deleted. Use these checks in order:

    1. Check Junk Email
    • Go to the Junk Email folder and look for the missing messages.
    • If found, select the message and choose Not junk > Not junk to move it back to Inbox.
    • Note: Messages in Junk are automatically removed after 30 days and are not recoverable after that.
    1. Check Focused/Other tabs
    • If Focused Inbox is enabled, messages may have been moved to Other.
    • Select the Other tab and look for the messages.
    • If found, select the message and choose Move to > Move to Focused inbox so future messages from that sender go to Focused.
    1. Check filters on the Inbox
    • If a filter is applied, pinned/starred messages might be hidden.
    • In Outlook.com, select Filter above the message list and set it to All.
    • On mobile apps or browser, clear any filter shown above the message list.
    1. Check the Deleted Items folder (including recoverable items)
    • Open Deleted Items and look for the messages.
    • If found, select them and choose Restore (or Move to folder > Inbox on mobile).
    • If not visible, in Deleted Items select Recover items deleted from this folder, then select the messages and choose Restore.
    • Messages removed from Deleted Items are only recoverable for 30 days and cannot be recovered from Outlook mobile apps or mobile browser; a computer must be used.
    1. Check the Archive folder
    • Open the Archive folder and look for the messages.
    • If found, select the message and choose Move to > Inbox (or Move to folder > Inbox on mobile).
    1. Check rules that might move or hide mail
    • Inbox or Sweep rules can automatically move messages out of Inbox (for example, to RSS or another folder).
    • Go to Rules settings in Outlook.com and review all rules.
    • Edit or delete any rule that is moving messages unexpectedly.
    • A similar scenario is documented where a rule silently diverted all new mail to another folder.
    1. Check for view filters in Outlook clients
    • If using Outlook desktop with the same account, a folder view filter can hide items.
    • In Outlook desktop: View > View Settings > Filter and review all tabs (Tasks, More Choices, Advanced) for conditions that might hide messages.
    • Remove or adjust filters so all items are visible.
    1. Check account activity / possible compromise
    • If there is any chance someone else accessed the account, review recent sign-ins at the Recent activity page.
    • Follow the guidance there to secure the account if suspicious activity is found.

If the messages were permanently deleted more than 30 days ago from Deleted Items or Junk, they are not recoverable. Otherwise, in most cases they can be found in Junk, Other, Deleted Items (including recoverable items), Archive, or another folder targeted by a rule, and then moved back to Inbox.
