My husband and I each have Microsoft 36t Personal accounts. How do we switch those to a Family Plan?

    Hello !

The AI answer above is correct.
You only need to upgrade one Microsoft account. With the account you've just upgraded, invite your husband to the family group.
However, keep in mind that a Microsoft account cannot have two Microsoft 365 subscriptions running at the same time. So, before inviting your husband to your family group, you'll have to wait for his subscription to expire.
Make sure you've cancelled the subscription. To do so, go to https://account.microsoft.com/services/microsoft365/details?lang=en-US#billing and select "Cancel subscription".

If you try to invite your husband when he has an active MS365 subscription, you'll get an error message.

Please let me know if you have any other question !

Both Microsoft 365 Personal subscriptions can be changed to Microsoft 365 Family; only one Family subscription is needed to cover both people.

Steps (for the account that will own the Family subscription):

    1. Go to the Microsoft account Services & subscriptions page: account.microsoft.com/services and sign in with the Microsoft account that will become the Family owner.
    2. Locate the existing Microsoft 365 Personal subscription and use Manage to switch to a different Microsoft 365 subscription (for example, to Microsoft 365 Family). The documented guidance for this is under Switch between Microsoft 365 subscriptions.
    3. When the switch completes, that account now has Microsoft 365 Family. The desktop apps do not need to be reinstalled when switching between Personal and Family.
4. Share the new Family subscription with the spouse’s Microsoft account using the Family sharing options described for Microsoft 365 Family. This allows up to six people to use the subscription, each with their own sign‑in and 1 TB of OneDrive storage.
    5. The other spouse can then allow their separate Microsoft 365 Personal subscription to expire or cancel it, since they will now be covered by the shared Family subscription.

Key effects of switching from Personal to Family:

    • Apps and features remain the same for the owner; Family simply allows sharing with up to five additional people.
    • Online storage per user does not change; Family increases the number of users, not the per‑user quota.
    • No reinstall of desktop apps is required when moving between Personal and Family.

For detailed subscription switching behavior (including remaining time and storage behavior), see the comparison of switching between Microsoft 365 Personal and Microsoft 365 Family.
