While trying to change my wife's local account to a MS account, I got locked out. Very awkward procedure to get back in - most involve need to login to the MS account, which is the very problem. Any suggestions? How long does the lock-out last? Any way I can chat with Support?

The lockout is tied to the Microsoft account, not Windows itself. When a Microsoft account is locked because of suspicious activity or too many attempts, it must be unlocked through Microsoft’s online process; local Windows sign‑in options alone will not unlock it.

    To proceed:

    1. Unlock the Microsoft account online
      • Go to https://account.microsoft.com and try to sign in with the locked Microsoft account.
      • Follow the prompt to get a security code sent by SMS. Any phone number that can receive text messages can be used; it does not need to be already associated with the account, and it does not need to be a smartphone.
      • Enter the code and complete any required steps (you may be asked to create a new password).
    2. If the account shows as locked with no “Next” button
      • When the sign‑in page indicates the account is locked and does not show Next, select the link in the window that begins with aka.ms/ and complete the reinstatement form.
      • After submitting, a Microsoft Online Safety support agent reviews the request and contacts by email. Do not submit multiple forms, as that can slow the response.
    3. Typical lockout duration
      • For security‑triggered lockouts (too many attempts or suspicious activity), the system may require waiting (often about 24 hours) before additional recovery attempts are accepted. During that time, avoid repeated sign‑in or recovery attempts, as they can extend the cooldown.
    4. If this is specifically an Outlook.com mailbox lock
      • Use the Sign‑in Helper for Outlook.com account unblocking as described in the Outlook.com guidance. If unblocking fails even after entering the security code or changing the password, follow the “When you can’t sign in to your Microsoft account” link from that article for further steps.
    5. Contacting Support / escalation
      • For consumer Microsoft accounts, recovery is largely automated for security reasons. Support agents and advocates can only send password reset links or change account details after the account‑reinstatement or recovery forms are completed.
      • If the forms and automated flows fail, use the “When you can’t sign in to your Microsoft account” and “Contact Support” options referenced in the Outlook.com and Microsoft account articles to reach a support agent (chat or callback availability depends on region). A different Microsoft account can be used to sign in to Support if needed.

Once the Microsoft account is successfully unlocked and the password is known, it can be re‑linked to the local Windows account from Settings → Accounts → Your info in Windows 11.
