Hiya,

I’ve found my bit locker key for my laptop, it’s the only one, however my laptop says it’s incorrect, is there anything else I can do?

    Good day Maddie Davies!

Thank you for reaching out to the Q&A forum.

If the recovery key you have is being rejected, there are a few important things to double‑check, but there are also clear limits to what can be done.

    Key things to verify first:

    • On the BitLocker recovery screen, note the Recovery Key ID (the first 8 characters shown).
    • Make sure the 48‑digit key you’re entering matches that exact Key ID. A valid key from another device, drive, or an older Windows install will always be refused, even if it’s the only key you can find.
    • Carefully re‑enter the full 48 digits. Any single incorrect digit will cause the key to be rejected.

    Check all possible backup locations:

    • Microsoft account used when Windows or BitLocker was set up: https://aka.ms/myrecoverykey
    • Any printed copy, USB file, or saved text/PDF created when BitLocker was enabled.

If none of the recovery keys you have match the Key ID shown on the BitLocker screen, unfortunately, BitLocker encryption cannot be bypassed or regenerated. In that case, the only supported option is to reset or reinstall Windows, which removes the encrypted data. Because of this, it’s strongly recommended to exhaust all accounts and backup locations before proceeding with a reset.

Hope this helps clarify things. Please let me know how it goes!

If the BitLocker recovery key that is available is reported as incorrect, the only supported options are:

    1. Verify that the key really matches the Recovery Key ID shown on the blue BitLocker screen.
      • On the recovery screen, note the first 8 digits of the Recovery Key ID.
      • Compare that ID with any recovery keys that can be found in the possible locations (Microsoft account, work/school account, printout, USB file). The key must have the same ID; otherwise it will be rejected.
    2. Check all possible locations for other keys in case there is more than one:
      • Microsoft account: From another device, go to https://aka.ms/myrecoverykey, sign in with the Microsoft account that was used when the device or BitLocker was set up, and look for a key whose ID matches the one on the recovery screen.
      • Work or school account (if the device was ever joined to an organization): From another device, go to https://aka.ms/aadrecoverykey, sign in with the work or school account, select Devices, expand the device, and choose View BitLocker Keys. Use the key whose ID matches the one on the screen. If access is not available, contact the organization’s IT support.
      • Printout: Check any printed BitLocker key documents that may have been saved when BitLocker was turned on.
      • USB flash drive: If the key was saved to a USB drive, open the text file on another device and again confirm the Recovery Key ID matches.
    3. If no matching key can be found anywhere:
      • BitLocker is working as designed and there is no way for Microsoft or anyone else to recreate or bypass a missing or incorrect key.
      • The only remaining option is to reset the device using the Windows recovery options. This will remove all files on the encrypted drive.
