Good day Maddie Davies!
Thank you for reaching out to the Q&A forum.
If the recovery key you have is being rejected, there are a few important things to double‑check, but there are also clear limits to what can be done.
Key things to verify first:
- On the BitLocker recovery screen, note the Recovery Key ID (the first 8 characters shown).
- Make sure the 48‑digit key you’re entering matches that exact Key ID. A valid key from another device, drive, or an older Windows install will always be refused, even if it’s the only key you can find.
- Carefully re‑enter the full 48 digits. Any single incorrect digit will cause the key to be rejected.
Check all possible backup locations:
- Microsoft account used when Windows or BitLocker was set up: https://aka.ms/myrecoverykey
- Any printed copy, USB file, or saved text/PDF created when BitLocker was enabled.
If none of the recovery keys you have match the Key ID shown on the BitLocker screen, unfortunately, BitLocker encryption cannot be bypassed or regenerated. In that case, the only supported option is to reset or reinstall Windows, which removes the encrypted data. Because of this, it’s strongly recommended to exhaust all accounts and backup locations before proceeding with a reset.
Hope this helps clarify things. Please let me know how it goes!
