Troubleshooting Bing Wallpaper that doesn't automatically load a new photo to my desktop everyday

For reasons that remain unclear, my Bing Wallpaper app stopped working properly about two weeks ago. It does not automatically download and display the new photo on my desktop.

I followed all of the suggested 'fixes' that were mentioned online, including uninstalling and installing the program, making sure the right boxes were checked, etc. I even asked Geek Squad to try to fix the problem, but their efforts were unsuccessful.

I work with an HP laptop computer using Windows 11. Incidentally, the program is still working successfully on my HP desktop computer using Windows 11.

As things stand now, I can get a new photo to appear, but only after I 'uncheck' and then 'check' the settings box that says "Daily Wallpaper Refresh - enable to change the background image daily."

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Marshall Goldberg

I understand how annoying it can be when it isn’t working the way you expect. At this point, I recommend that you review and try the steps provided in the AI generated answer on your thread. That reply typically include the most relevant checks for this scenario.

To help narrow this down, could you please share a bit more detail?

    • Are you seeing any error message or code? If yes, could you please send a screenshot?
    • Is this happening on just one device, or on multiple devices with that same account?
    • Could you also let me know whether you’ve tried testing Bing Wallpaper from a different Windows user profile on the same PC?

Could you also let me know which suggested fixes you’ve already tried so far? That way, I can focus on other troubleshooting steps and avoid repeating any steps you’ve already gone through.

While my initial response may not fully resolve the issue, I truly appreciate your cooperation as we work together toward identifying the most effective solution. Thank you so much for your understanding.

Bing Wallpaper relies on the Bing daily image feed and normal Windows app behavior. When it stops refreshing automatically but still changes after toggling “Daily Wallpaper Refresh,” the issue is typically with the app’s state or with Windows treating it like a problematic Store app.

Use this sequence on the HP laptop where the problem occurs:

    1. Repair or reset Bing Wallpaper
      1. Select Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
      2. Find Bing Wallpaper in the list.
      3. Select the More icon next to it, then Advanced options.
      4. First select Repair (if available) and test whether daily refresh works the next day.
      5. If the issue persists, go back to Advanced options and select Reset. This clears the app’s data and can fix a stuck refresh state.
    2. Reinstall via Microsoft Store if needed If repair/reset does not help:
      1. Uninstall Bing Wallpaper from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
      2. Open Microsoft Store.
      3. Go to Library, locate Bing Wallpaper, and select Install to reinstall it cleanly.
    3. If Microsoft Store or the app misbehaves If Bing Wallpaper or other Store apps show issues (downloads stuck, updates not applying), follow the Store app troubleshooting steps:
      1. Make sure Windows 11 is fully updated: Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates, then Install now if anything is available.
      2. In Microsoft Store, open Library and select Get updates to ensure Store and Bing Wallpaper are up to date.
      3. If the app still fails to behave, use the Repair or Remove programs in Windows guidance again to repair/reset it.

Once Bing Wallpaper has been repaired/reset and reinstalled if necessary, re‑enable Daily Wallpaper Refresh in its settings and leave it checked. The app should then resume automatically applying the new Bing image each day.

Hello Vikki-T: Unfortunately, the problem described earlier, despite the earlier 'fixes,' has returned.

I open to any other suggestions that fix the problem.

Ultimately, since the image was being downloaded to the Library on a daily basis, clearing the image cache and restarting the computer everyday solved the problem.
