Virtual Network Gateway Reports Migration In Progress

We have a Virtual Network Gateway deployed in our Azure virtual network.

We attempted to update the certificate in the Point-to-Site VPN configuration. However, when we tried to save the change, we received the following error:


Failed to save virtual network gateway

Failed to save virtual network gateway 'spoke01-eau-gw'. Error: Virtual network gateway is in the migration process. Cannot make changes to gateway.

The gateway SKU is VpnGw1AZ. Based on our understanding, this SKU should not require migration, and we have not initiated any migration activity on this gateway.

Could you please clarify why Azure is reporting that the gateway is in a migration process, and advise how we can resolve this issue so we can update the Point-to-Site VPN certificate?

I understand you're unable to update the certificate in the Point-to-Site VPN configuration and are seeing the error message: "Virtual network gateway is in the migration process. Cannot make changes to gateway."

When the VPN gateway is in a migration state, changes can't be made, which is why you're encountering this error when trying to delete it.

Please try aborting the operation from the portal. After the abort operation is successful, you should be able to delete the VPN gateway. Follow this step https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questions/5727969/my-vpn-gateway-is-stuck-in-the-migrating-state-and

I would like to clarify that we did not initiate any migration for this Virtual Network Gateway. The gateway uses the VpnGw1AZ SKU, and based on our understanding, migration is not required for this type of gateway.

As recommended, I attempted to abort the migration operation using the following Azure CLI command:

az network vnet-gateway migration abort \ --gateway-name "spoke01-eau-gw" \ --resource-group "spoke01-eau-rg" \ --subscription XXXXXXXX \ --no-wait

However, this did not resolve the issue. I am still unable to update the Point-to-Site VPN certificate.

I also checked the current gateway status with:

az network vnet-gateway show \ --resource-group "spoke01-eau-rg" \ --name "spoke01-eau-gw" \ --subscription XXXXXXXX

The output still shows that the gateway is stuck in an updating state, and the migration status remains in progress:

"provisioningState": "Updating", "virtualNetworkGatewayMigrationStatus": { "errorMessage": "", "phase": "Abort", "state": "InProgress" }

At this point, it appears that the Virtual Network Gateway is stuck in an updating/migration state, even though no actual migration was initiated on our side.

Could you please help reset or clear the Virtual Network Gateway status so that we can update the Point-to-Site VPN certificate?

This is urgent because our current certificate will expire in two days, and we need to complete the certificate update before that happens.

After running the below command:

az network vnet-gateway migration abort \ --gateway-name "spoke01-eau-gw" \ --resource-group "spoke01-eau-rg" \ --subscription XXXXXXXX \ --no-wait

Have you got any error?

There were no errors during execution.

The item is now in a fixed state; however, I’m not sure what was fixed or how it was resolved.
