I invited my wife to share our family plan. She downloaded and it said she was all set. I can see on my account that now I have 4 shares left so that means she should be all set. But she can't log in.

Can you go check her Windows Settings > Windows update, and see if you might have  KB5085516 available to install?

KB5085516 was released on March 21st to address Microsoft account sign in issue among some apps caused by KB5079473 https://support.microsoft.com/topic/march-21-2026-kb5085516-os-builds-26200-8039-and-26100-8039-out-of-band-09e85404-1cb6-4ed4-9ca5-3e40d74307b9

There are a few common reasons why a shared Microsoft 365 Family subscription shows as used on the owner’s account but the invited person cannot sign in.

Work through these checks in order:

    1. Confirm the subscription type and that sharing is allowed
      • Only an active Microsoft 365 Family (or Premium) subscription can be shared.
      • On the subscription owner’s account, go to the Microsoft account Services & subscriptions page and verify it is a Family subscription and is active. If Share subscription is not available, it is not a Family subscription and cannot be shared.
    2. Verify that the wife accepted the sharing invitation correctly
      On the owner’s account:
      • Open the sharing dashboard (View sharing).
      • Check the list of people:
        • If the wife appears under people you have already shared with, sharing is active for that Microsoft account.
        • If she appears as invited but not in your Microsoft family group, she must complete the invitation and join the family group.
      • If she never accepted or used a different account when accepting, resend the invitation and ensure she signs in with the same Microsoft account she will use in the apps.
    3. Check that she is in the correct Microsoft family group
      • The subscription dashboard categorizes:
        1. Family group members not yet shared with (shows Start sharing).
        2. Family group members already shared with.
        3. Other people already shared with.
      • If she is not in the family group, use Invite to family for her entry and have her accept that invitation. Only after she selects Join now and joins the family group will the Family subscription dashboard fully update.
    4. Confirm she is not already using another shared subscription
      • If her Microsoft account is already part of another shared Microsoft 365 Family subscription, it cannot receive full benefits from a second one. In that case, she must leave the other shared subscription before using this one.
    5. Have her sign in with the exact Microsoft account that was shared
      • On her PC, sign out of all Office apps and any Microsoft account in Windows where relevant.
      • Then sign in to Office apps using the same email address that appears under your sharing dashboard for her. If she tries to sign in with a different personal, work, or school account, it will not see the shared Family benefits.
    6. If needed, stop sharing and re-share
      • On the owner’s sharing page, use Stop sharing for her entry, then send a fresh invitation and have her accept it again with the correct Microsoft account.

If these steps are followed, the subscription owner’s dashboard should show her as a shared member (and possibly in the family group), and she should be able to sign in to the desktop apps and services using that same Microsoft account.
