I added a holiday background picture to my computer in December. I tried to change the personalization back to one of the standard ones and was blocked because I supposedly don't have a valid visual license or product ID. I am part of a business and all other apps, functions etc. are working. My product ID is 00355-61584-64293-AAOEM. How do I "activate" my account for personalization when Microsoft works find for all my other functions?

This hasn’t been pointed out yet but your Product ID ending in AAOEM usually means it’s tied to an OEM or volume license, and in business setups activation is often handled by your company’s server not Microsoft directly. If personalization suddenly locked, it’s usually because your device lost activation with your organization. Go to Settings > System > Activation and hit “Activate” while connected to your work network or VPN. If that doesn’t stick, disconnect and reconnect your work account under Access work or school and restart. If your company uses volume licensing, you may need IT to re-trigger activation on their end since local changes won’t override that.
Hi Shannon Heilman,
The error you’re seeing about a “visual license or product ID” usually points to a problem with Windows activation or with the licensing service that controls personalization settings.
First, I recommend confirming that Windows is fully activated. You can do this by going to Settings > Update & Security > Activation. If activation shows as valid, the next step is to run the Activation Troubleshooter from that same menu, which often clears up mismatched license states. Since you’re using an OEM product ID, it’s possible that the system is misreading the license after the background change.
Another helpful step is to check Group Policy or registry settings if you’re part of a business domain. Sometimes personalization is restricted by organizational policy, and the error message can be misleading. If you have admin rights, you can verify under User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Control Panel > Personalization that no restrictions are applied.
If none of these steps resolve the issue, I suggest running sfc /scannow and DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth from an elevated command prompt to repair any underlying system files that may be interfering with personalization. These commands won’t affect your data but can restore missing components tied to licensing.
I hope the response provided some helpful insight. If it clarified the issue for you, please consider marking it as Accept Answer so others with the same issue can find the solution.
