The behavior is usually caused by Word detecting changes to the global template (Normal.dotm) or by an add‑in/macro modifying it, even if the document itself was not edited.
To stop the prompt, address the underlying cause and/or turn off the warning:
- Check for add-ins changing Normal.dotm
- Close Word and Outlook.
- In File Explorer, open the Word Startup folder. By default:
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Word\STARTUP
(To confirm the exact path: in Word go to File > Options > Advanced, under General select File Locations.)
- Move everything out of the STARTUP folder to a temporary folder (for example, on the desktop).
- Start Word and test closing a document without changes.
- If the prompt no longer appears, add items back to the STARTUP folder one by one, testing each time, to find the problematic add-in/template.
- Also check COM add-ins:
- In Word, go to File > Options > Add-ins.
- At the bottom, next to Manage: COM Add-ins, select Go.
- Clear add-ins you suspect, then restart Word and test.
- Check for macro-virus activity
If the Normal.dotm template is being modified by a macro virus, Word will keep prompting to save it. Ensure antivirus software and virus definitions are fully updated and run a full scan. For more information, see Protect yourself from macro viruses (linked in the referenced article).
- Disable the Normal.dotm save prompt (stops the message, not the cause)
If the goal is simply to stop seeing the message, Word can silently save changes to Normal.dotm:
- In Word, go to File > Options > Advanced.
- Under the Save group, clear Prompt before saving Normal template.
Important: This only hides the prompt. If an add-in or macro is changing Normal.dotm, it will continue to do so; Word will just save the template automatically.
Following steps 1 and 2 removes the root cause; step 3 suppresses the prompt if the underlying changes are acceptable.
