Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
The OneDrive account is in read-only mode because the email address currently does not have a valid OneDrive license assigned, even though there is an active subscription.
For a home/personal subscription, the key is to make sure the correct Microsoft account (email address) is the one that actually owns or is using the active subscription. If that account is unlicensed, OneDrive will move into read-only mode after 60 days and then archive mode after 93 days.
To link the current subscription to the email address that is read-only, do the following:
- Sign in online with the email address that should have the subscription and check the subscription status.
- Go to the Microsoft account services page and confirm that the 12‑month Microsoft 365 subscription is shown as active for that same email.
- If the subscription is under a different email address, the OneDrive for the read‑only account will remain unlicensed.
- If the subscription is active but OneDrive is still unlicensed/read-only:
- Sign out of OneDrive on all devices using that email.
- Sign back in with the Microsoft account that actually owns the active subscription.
- If the email in read-only mode does not own the subscription:
- Either move to using the account that owns the subscription as the primary OneDrive account, or
- If possible, change the subscription so that it is purchased/activated under the email address that needs OneDrive (for example, by redeeming the product key or setting up the subscription while signed in with that account).
Once the account has a valid license, OneDrive will leave read-only/archive mode and full access to files (view, upload, edit) will be restored. If the account remains unlicensed for 93 days, it will go into archive mode and access to files will be lost until a valid license is assigned.
If this is a work or school account, contact the organization’s IT administrator and ask them to assign a OneDrive license to that user in the Microsoft 365 admin center under Users → Active users → Licenses and apps.
