A family of Microsoft spreadsheet software with tools for analyzing, charting, and communicating data
Dear @Stu,
I understand how frustrating it is when a basic function like "Delete" is greyed out, especially when you need to manage your workbook efficiently.
The "Delete" option for a tab is usually greyed out for one of two specific reasons: Workbook Protection or because it is the last remaining sheet in the file.
I recommend checking these three settings to resolve the issue:
Option 1: Check for Workbook Protection
If the structure of the workbook is locked, you cannot add, move, or delete tabs.
- Go to the Review tab on the top ribbon.
- Look at the Protect Workbook button. If it is highlighted or says, "Unprotect Workbook," click it.
- You may be prompted for a password if one was set by the creator. Once unprotected, the delete option will return.
For more details on managing sheet protection, you can refer to the official Microsoft support guide: Protect a workbook - Microsoft Support
Option 2: Check the Number of Visible Sheets Excel requires at least one visible worksheet at all times.
- If your workbook only has one tab, the Delete option will be greyed out because you cannot have a completely empty workbook.
- Solution: Insert a new blank tab first (+ icon), then try deleting the original one.
Option 3: Check for Shared or Read-Only Status If the file is marked as "Final" or is being co-authored in a way that restricts structural changes, the option may be disabled.
- Ensure the file is not in "Protected View" (click Enable Editing at the top if the yellow bar appears).
Note: As moderators in the community, I'm not supported for the product design regarding how protection UI is displayed; however, I'm redirected you to the correct path by identifying the structural locks within the Review tab.
I hope the above information is clear. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. Please let me know how it goes after trying the steps above. I’m here to help further if needed.
