Accidental upgrade from Activated Windows Home to Unactivated Pro using Generic Key - How to revert?

Hello,

I am looking for assistance in reverting my Windows edition from Pro back to Home.

The Situation: I previously had a fully activated version of Windows 11 Home that came with my device. I attempted to upgrade to the Pro edition to test the features and followed a guide online that instructed me to:

  1. Disconnect from the internet.

Enter the generic product key: VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T.

The Problem: The system successfully changed to the Pro edition, but as expected, it is now un activated because I do not own a Pro license. I want to go back to my original Home edition which was already activated, but the "Activation" settings do not provide an option to "Go Back" or downgrade.

My Questions:

Is there a way to revert to Windows Home without performing a clean "custom" install and losing my files?

If I must reinstall Windows Home from a USB drive, will my digital license automatically recognize my hardware and reactivate?

Are there any official Microsoft tools (like the Media Creation Tool) that can perform an "In-place Downgrade"?

Thank you for your time and help.

There may be slim chance that System Restore may go back to Home edition. It may be risky to try so make sure you have a full backup of your personal files if you are going to try it.

Other than that it is a clean install to get Home edition using a bootable USB windows installation flash drive from

    Download Windows 11 - Microsoft

    Hi Ateeb Javed,

I understand how confusing this situation can be, especially since your device originally came with an activated Windows 11 Home license.

Once Windows is switched to Pro using the generic Pro key, the installed edition itself becomes Pro. Because of that, Windows does not provide any built‑in “go back” or downgrade option in Settings. This behavior is expected, even if you never owned a Pro license.

The important part is that your original Windows 11 Home digital license is still intact. It’s tied to your device’s hardware and hasn’t been lost. If Windows 11 Home is reinstalled on this device, activation will happen automatically as soon as the system goes online, even if you skip entering a product key during setup.

Microsoft does not offer an official in‑place downgrade tool from Pro back to Home. The Media Creation Tool and ISO setup only officially support upgrades or same‑edition repair installs. While there are community‑documented workarounds that can downgrade Pro to Home while keeping files and apps, those methods are not officially supported by Microsoft.

For a fully supported and guaranteed result, the recommended approach is to back up your data and perform a clean install of Windows 11 Home using the Media Creation Tool. Once installed, your Home edition should reactivate automatically.

I hope this clears things up and reassures you that your Home license hasn’t been lost.
