    Hello Chuck Colby!

    Thank you for reaching out.

Based on what you described, you’re trying to sign in to a new computer, but Windows keeps reporting that the password is incorrect.

First, may I ask if you’re logging in with a Microsoft account or a local account, and whether you can sign in to another administrator account on the device?

Please note that for Microsoft account sign‑in, the new device must be connected to the internet so the account can be verified. If you can successfully sign in to the Microsoft account online but Windows still reports the password as incorrect, try starting the computer in Safe Mode with Networking and attempt to sign in there to see if that helps, here's how:

Step 1: Force the PC to Safe Mode

    1. Press and hold the Power button to shut down the device.
    2. Turn it on again and repeat this shutdown process 2–3 times until Windows shows Preparing Automatic Repair and enters Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE).
    3. When you see Choose an option, go to: Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > then select Restart.
    4. After restart, choose: Enable Safe Mode with Networking

Step 2: Once Windows starts in Safe Mode: Select Sign‑in options > Sign in using your account password.

If the issue continues, you might need to use Windows Recovery Environment to reset your password:

    In WinRE, select Troubleshoot.

    From here:

    • If you’re using a Microsoft account, Windows will prompt you to reset the password online after you regain connectivity.
    • If you’re using a local account and previously set up security questions, you may be prompted to answer them to reset the password.

Hope this helps. I look forward for your response!

To sign in successfully and fix the “password incorrect” issue on a new Windows 11 PC, follow these steps in order:

    1. Confirm the correct account and sign-in method
    • On the sign-in screen, check which account name/email is shown.
    • If it is a Microsoft account (shows an email address), the password must be the same one used for that Microsoft account.
    • If it is a local account (just a name, no email), use the local password created on that PC.
    1. Carefully re-enter the password
    • Make sure Caps Lock and Num Lock are set correctly.
    • If using a different keyboard layout than usual (for example after a reset or on a new device), some characters may be in different positions. Try typing the password in the username box or another field to visually confirm what is being entered.
    1. Try signing in with a different method
    • If a PIN was set up, switch to PIN sign-in on the login screen and enter the PIN.
    • If Windows Hello (face, fingerprint) was set up, use that to sign in.
    1. Use the built-in recovery options on the sign-in screen
    • For a Microsoft account:
      • Select I forgot my password on the sign-in screen and follow the steps to reset it online.
      • If needed, see Forgot your Microsoft account password from the troubleshooting article.
    • For a local account:
      • Use I forgot my password (if shown) or follow Reset your Windows local account password.
    1. If still unable to sign in
    • Use the guidance in Troubleshoot Problems Signing In to Windows and follow the appropriate path:
      • Change or reset your Windows password
      • Forgot your PIN if the PIN is the issue rather than the password.

If there is another administrator account on the PC, that account can reset the local password using Computer Management as described in Change or reset a local account password from another account.
