How to release or delete a tenant from a microsoft 365 account

I initiated a M365 Business Standard subscription and in the set up process created a tenant with my business name. I did not complete that subscription but however need that tenant name released so that I can use it for another M365 Business Standard subscription that I instead purchased.

I've tried to obtain assistance via the admin.microsoft.com support function but for some reason that does not respond to my queries.

How can I get the tenant name released?

    Hi @Adele,

Thank you for reaching out and explaining the situation regarding your Microsoft 365 tenant name.

I understand how difficult this can be, especially when the tenant was created during setup but the subscription was not completed, and you now need to use the same tenant name for a different Microsoft 365 Business Standard subscription.

At this point, the only way to investigate or take action on a tenant-related request is by creating a support ticket directly with Microsoft. As a forum moderator, I don’t have the permissions or tools required to access tenants, release tenant names, or make backend changes on accounts.

If you’ve already opened a ticket, please feel free to send me the support ticket ID via private message, and I’ll be happy to check the status.

A tenant name (the *.onmicrosoft.com domain) is tied to the Microsoft Entra tenant and can only be reused after that tenant is deleted. To release it, the original tenant that owns that name must be fully cleaned up and deleted.

From the provided information, the required high‑level steps are:

    1. Cancel and delete all subscriptions in the original tenant
      • In the original tenant, sign in to the Microsoft 365 admin center as Global Administrator.
      • Go to Billing > Your products and Cancel subscription for each Microsoft 365 subscription in that tenant.
      • After cancellation, use Delete on each subscription so it moves to Disabled and then to Deprovisioned (for license-based subscriptions). The tenant cannot be deleted until subscriptions are in Deprovisioned state.
      • For Azure subscriptions associated with that tenant, cancel them and then delete them from the Azure portal once the Delete subscription option becomes available.
    2. Delete any self‑service sign‑up products
      • In the same tenant, go to the Microsoft Entra admin center.
      • Navigate to Microsoft Entra ID > Licenses > Self-service sign-up products.
      • For each product (for example, Power BI), select it and choose Delete so its state becomes Deleted.
    3. Delete the Microsoft Entra tenant
      • After all Microsoft 365/Azure subscriptions and self‑service products are deleted or deprovisioned, go to the Microsoft Entra admin center.
      • Ensure there are no blocking subscriptions or products.
      • Use Microsoft Entra ID > Overview > Delete directory to delete the tenant.

Once the original tenant is fully deleted, the associated tenant name can be reused when creating or configuring the new Microsoft 365 Business Standard subscription.

If the tenant has already gone inactive and is blocked, and self‑service cleanup is not possible, tenant reactivation or deletion may require contacting Microsoft support (for example, via global support phone numbers) to have the tenant reactivated or closed so the name can be released.
