Issue with Excel Copying and pasting

Hi there,

My Excel has suddenly stopped C&P correctly. I have some text in cells, but I only want to copy and paste a specific part of that text into another cell. However, even when I double click, highlight the text that I want and press CTRL + C, it just pastes the ENTIRE cell text into the target cell when I press CTRL + V.

Very annoying and I don't know why this is happening all of a sudden.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

This is happening at our organization through our Sharepoint Excel documents as well and is causing a lot of challenges for us. It's not a settings issue. Something changed on March 24th. Prior to that, for years we have always been able to cut and paste a single line from one cell to the next. Now it copies the entire text no matter what we do. I am working with online support but if anyone finds a solution post it here? If we click "editing" and do it in the Desktop app, it appears to still work correctly, but we often have many documents and users at once and Sharepoint is the best solution so we are a bit stuck.

It looks like when i select text inside a cell and right click it doesn't even have the option to copy text, all that is available are formatting options. This is definitely not a settings issue but a recent update by Microsoft.

Temporary fix workaround, select the text you want to copy then CTRL+X (CUT) -> CTRL+Z (UNDO)

and then you can paste CTRL+V only selected the text.

I actually came here to post this solution - sucks that there isn't a better fix but this is definitely the easiest workaround for now. :)

If the file is saved in OneDrive or SharePoint, changes in the desktop app save automatically and sync online, so others see updates right away in their browser. You do not need to upload a new copy. If the file is stored locally on your PC, others will not see changes unless you upload or share the updated file.

I see this is happening in Excel online.

Are you opening the file in a browser only?

Excel for the web does not fully support copying part of text inside a cell and often pastes the whole cell. Open the file using “Open in Desktop App”, then press F2 in both source and target cells before copying and pasting to copy only selected text.

That's so weird, it was literally doing it perfectly for the last 2 weeks up until yesterday! Is it normal/usual for it to just relapse like that?

Thanks for that tip though, it seems to work! - Silly question, but because I'm editing in the app now and not online, will it still show changes I make if other people Access it through the browser? Or do I need to upload a new copy each time I make edits?

Does this happen in all workbooks or only one file?

Try resetting Excel editing behavior. Go to File, Options, Advanced, then under Editing options make sure “Allow editing directly in cells” is checked. Restart Excel after changing it. If it still happens, start Excel in Safe Mode by holding Ctrl while opening Excel, then test copy and paste again. If it works in Safe Mode, disable add ins from File, Options, Add ins, then restart Excel and test again.

Hello,

Are you editing the cell first, with the cursor inside the text, before selecting and copying?

Open the cell in edit mode by double clicking or pressing F2, then select only the part of the text inside the cell, press Ctrl + C, go to the target cell, press F2 again to enter edit mode, then press Ctrl + V. Excel copies partial text only when both source and destination are in edit mode, otherwise it pastes the full cell content.

Yes sadly I am. I am double-clicking into the source cell, highlighting only the specific text that I want, CRTL C, then double-clicking the target cell (ensuring the cursor is blinking in the cell) and then pressing CTRL V. But it still copies the entire source cell (not just the highlighted text) into the target cell.

This happens to all the online excel files. It copies the whole cell instead of copying only the selected portion of a cell. It never used to do that, but it started today.

Whatever you do, press F2 or double clicking into a cell and selecting a portion of it doesn't work. It just copies the whole cell instead
