Changing from Microsoft 365 Family to Microsoft 365 Personal (single user) is done by switching the subscription plan; it cannot be changed automatically by another party.
Follow these steps:
- Go to the Services & subscriptions page and sign in with the Microsoft account that currently has the Microsoft 365 Family subscription: https://account.microsoft.com/services
- Find the Microsoft 365 Family subscription in the list and select Manage.
- If the option is available, choose Switch plan or Change and select Microsoft 365 Personal as the new plan. Confirm the change.
- This switches the subscription type from Family (up to 6 people) to Personal (single user). Remaining subscription time can be extended when switching, as described in the documentation.
- If there is no direct switch option, turn off recurring billing for the Family subscription, let it expire, and then purchase/activate a Microsoft 365 Personal subscription instead.
Key effects when switching from Family to Personal:
- Subscription can be used by only one person instead of up to six.
- OneDrive storage size per user stays the same, but the number of users decreases.
- Skype minutes per user stay the same, but the number of users decreases.
If the subscription was purchased through a third-party billing partner (such as Apple App Store or Google Play), subscription management (including switching plans) must be done through that partner as described in the switching article.
If a Microsoft 365 Personal product key is applied to an account that currently has Microsoft 365 Family, Microsoft provides a choice to stay on Family or convert to Personal; after choosing Personal, the benefits update accordingly.
