A Microsoft file hosting and synchronization service.
Dear @JR Delos Santos,
I understand how frustrating it can be to make changes to a file and then discover that those changes weren’t saved.
According to my research, many users have also reported this issue when using OneDrive through the iPadOS Files app. While files can open successfully from OneDrive via the Files app, edits made this way do not always sync back correctly. In some cases, the app works on a local copy, which can make it look like changes were saved even though they were not written back to OneDrive.
To help me narrow this down and identify where the saving process is failing, could you please help confirm a few details below:
- Are you using a personal Microsoft account (@outlook.com/hotmail.com) or a work account (@company.com)?
- What type of file is affected (for example: Word, Excel, PDF)?
- Does this happen with all files or only specific ones?
- When you open the file, do you see any indication that it is read‑only or restricted in any way?
- Have you checked whether your OneDrive storage has available space, and is it close to being full?
- After saving, do you see any sync indicator (such as “Saving…” or “All changes saved”) before closing the file?
- Are you working with files stored in your own OneDrive, or files that were shared with you by someone else?
- Are you using any VPN, firewall, or content‑filtering profile on the iPad that could affect syncing?
As a workaround, I recommend opening and editing your files directly from the OneDrive app instead of the Files app. Saving from within the OneDrive app uses OneDrive’s own sync engine and is currently the most reliable way to ensure changes are preserved.
Moreover, make sure that you’re connected to a stable network while editing and saving the file. If possible, try switching to a different Wi‑Fi network, or test again using mobile data / hotspot to see if the behavior changes. An unstable or restricted network connection can sometimes prevent changes from syncing back to OneDrive, even though the file appears to save locally.
In the meantime, to help rule out common causes, please double‑check the following:
- Your OneDrive storage is not full, as insufficient storage can prevent changes from being saved back to the cloud
- The file is not opening in read‑only mode, which would allow edits locally but block saving
- The app you’re using to edit the file is properly activated and signed in with the same account that owns the OneDrive files
Note: Please understand that as a forum moderator, my role is to provide general guidance and troubleshooting support. I don’t have access to internal systems or backend tools, and I appreciate your understanding of these limits.
I hope the information shared helps point you in the right direction. Please try the steps above and let me know if they work. If not, we can continue working together to narrow this down.
The first response may not always resolve the issue right away, but with your help and more details, we can work toward a solution.
Thank you for your patience and understanding. I'm looking forward for your reply.
