Do you have an Office subscription? You can check its status if you sign in to your account at https://account.microsoft.com/services.

Loss of editing access in Microsoft 365 apps is almost always due to an activation or subscription/licensing issue. Use these steps to restore full functionality:

    1. Check for subscription or payment problems
If a yellow bar appears with a message like:

"ACCOUNT NOTICE. We've run into a problem with your Microsoft 365 subscription and need your help to fix it." this typically indicates a payment or subscription status issue (for example, expired or suspended subscription due to declined payment).
Follow the guidance in the article for this error to resolve subscription/payment problems. If nothing is done, Office eventually runs in reduced functionality mode where documents can be opened and printed but not edited or newly created.

    2. Confirm that a valid Microsoft 365 subscription is active
Make sure there is an active Microsoft 365 subscription associated with the signed-in account:
      • For Microsoft 365 Family or Personal: go to the Subscriptions page on the Microsoft account dashboard and verify that the subscription is listed as active.
      • For Microsoft 365 for business: go to the My Account dashboard with the work or school account and select View on the Subscriptions tile to confirm that a Microsoft 365/Office 365 license is assigned. If no license appears, contact the organization’s IT admin.
    3. Verify license assignment in Microsoft 365 admin center (for business tenants)
If using a work or school account, an admin should:
      1. Go to Microsoft 365 Admin Center → Users → Active users.
      2. Select the affected user.
      3. Open Licenses and Apps.
      4. Ensure the appropriate Microsoft 365 license is checked. If it is already assigned, uncheck it, save changes, then re-check it and save again to refresh the assignment.
    4. Sign out of Office apps and sign back in with the correct account
      1. Open any Office app (for example, Word).
      2. Select the name/profile icon at the top and choose Sign out.
      3. Close all Office apps.
      4. Reopen an Office app and select Sign in.
      5. Sign in with the account that has the active Microsoft 365 subscription (work/school or personal, as appropriate).
    5. If prompted with Product Deactivated or similar banners
If a Product Deactivated banner appears:
      • Select the Reactivate button in the banner and sign in again when prompted, or
      • Sign out of all Microsoft 365 apps (including Outlook), close them, reopen an app, and sign in again. If the issue persists, an admin should verify that the subscription has not expired.

If no action is taken on subscription or activation issues, Office will continue to run in reduced functionality mode, allowing only viewing and printing but not editing or creating documents.
