What is this daily limit issue?

I've sent ONE email today to ONE person and now I'm trying to send out another email BCC to 48 people to update them on my new email address and it will not let me send it out. Says "your message wasn't sent because there's a daily limit for how many messages can be sent...." Literally my second email and there's under 50 people it's drafted to be sent to.

What crazy is this? Microsoft you are failing the people you're supposed to serve! Why can't I send out the email? I've spent half the day updating my contacts and the other half the day trying to get Classic Outlook back to no avail.

    Hi, I'm John!

This can happen if the system detects unusual activity, or if your account hasn’t been fully verified.

Can I ask if you’re using Outlook with a personal Microsoft account or through a work/school account?

For personal accounts, the best place to start is making sure your account is fully verified, check that your security info (like your phone number or alternate email) is up to date at https://account.microsoft.com Once that’s done, the limits often lift within 24 hours.

If it’s a work or school account, you may need to reach out to your IT admin since they control sending limits for your organization.

For more detailed guidance please see "How can I increase sending limits?" section here: https://support.microsoft.com/office/sending-limits-in-outlook-com-279ee200-594c-40f0-9ec8-bb6af7735c2e

I really hope this information is helpful! Let me know if you have any further questions or concerns.

    Regards,

    John J.D.

Outlook.com enforces sending limits to protect against spam. Even if only a few messages were sent, the account can still hit a temporary quota if:

    • The account is new or recently created.
    • The system has not yet established enough “credibility” for the account.

In that case, Outlook.com applies a lower daily sending quota than the normal limits and blocks further sends with the “daily limit” message. This can happen even when sending to fewer than 50 recipients.

For Outlook.com, the documented limits (once fully established, especially for Microsoft 365 subscribers) are:

    • Up to 5,000 recipients per day
    • Up to 500 recipients per message
    • Up to 1,000 “non-relationship” recipients (people never emailed before) per day

However, for new or less-established accounts, Outlook.com uses a lower temporary quota until normal usage over time proves the account is not being used for spam. That is why a second message to 48 BCC recipients can be blocked even though it is below the standard per‑message and per‑day recipient limits.

There is no manual override for this; the restriction lifts automatically as the account gains sending history. If the problem persists beyond normal use over time, support can be contacted via Outlook.com Help.
