Microsoft account last name change

Question

I need to change my last name of Microsoft account as soon as possible. I have registered for a certification exam. So I need the name change before that

You update your Legal name on your Microsoft Learn profile under Settings https://learn.microsoft.com/users/me/settings

To change the last name on a Microsoft account (which will appear on certification profiles, emails, and Windows devices), update the Microsoft account display name and user account name.

1. Change the Microsoft account display name (last name)
   1. Sign in to the Microsoft account profile page using the account used for exam registration. Use this entry point: Edit name.
      • Edit name
   2. On the Edit name screen, update the Last name field to the correct last name.
   3. Complete the Captcha if prompted, then select Save.
   Notes:
   • It may take up to 24 hours for the updated name to appear everywhere, including services that use the Microsoft account (such as certification portals).
   • If sign-in fails, use the Microsoft account sign-in helper.
2. Ensure the Windows user account name reflects the change (if needed)
   • The user account name on Windows devices shows the name of the signed-in Microsoft account.
   • To update what is shown on the device, first change the Microsoft account display name as above. The updated name will sync to the device (this can also take some time).
3. If the account is a work or school account
   • For work/school accounts, sign in to the work or school account portal to update the name.
   • Some organizations do not allow users to change their names; in that case, contact the organization’s IT admin to request a last-name correction.

Because name changes can take up to 24 hours to propagate, perform the change as soon as possible before the certification exam so the correct last name appears on exam and certification records.
