I can’t activate Windows. It shows error code 0x8031-10000-00001-AA413. I don’t have a product key. How can I fix this?

    Hi,

Is the computer in question a pre-built computer that came already activated, or do you have a 25-digit digital or physical key?

If you have made any hardware changes, such as a motherboard replacement, and have a digital key, please follow the procedure below:

    Thanks

The specific error code 0x8031-10000-00001-AA413 is not listed in the provided activation error documentation, but the general guidance for Windows 11/10 activation issues without a product key applies.

    Follow these steps:

    1. Confirm Windows is up to date
      • On the device, select Start > Settings > Update & Security (or Windows Update in Windows 11) and install all pending updates.
    2. Run the Activation troubleshooter
      • Go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
      • If available, select Troubleshoot and let it attempt to fix the activation problem.
      • If the error code changes after troubleshooting, follow the guidance for the new code in the activation errors list.
    3. Check for a digital license or embedded key
      • If Windows 11/10 came preinstalled on the PC, the license may be embedded in the device firmware and should activate automatically once the correct edition is installed and the device is online.
      • If Windows was previously activated on this hardware and linked to a Microsoft account, signing in with that same account can automatically reactivate it. For major hardware changes (like motherboard replacement), use the Troubleshoot option on the Activation page and follow the “reactivate after a hardware change” path if offered.
    4. If no valid license is found
      • If the system reports that no valid license or product key exists for the device, activation will require a valid product key or digital license.
      • To purchase a license from Microsoft, go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Activation and select Go to Microsoft Store.
    5. When a product key becomes available
      • If a valid key is later found (for example from device packaging, email receipt, or OEM documentation):
        1. Select Start > Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
        2. Select Change product key and enter the 25‑character key.

If the Activation troubleshooter cannot resolve the issue and no digital license or key is available, the remaining supported path is to obtain a new Windows license.
