A web-based tool in Microsoft 365 that enables users to quickly create surveys, quizzes, polls, and feedback forms.
Microsoft Forms itself does not have a per-form “read-only” toggle that can be switched off in the form UI. When a form suddenly becomes uneditable, the cause is usually outside Forms, most commonly in the OneDrive or SharePoint document library that stores the form’s files.
If the library that backs the form has Require documents to be checked out before they can be edited enabled, items associated with the form can effectively become read-only and cause errors or prevent editing scenarios. To restore editability, disable this requirement in the library that stores the form:
For a form stored in OneDrive for work or school:
- Sign in to your OneDrive for work or school site.
- Select the Settings icon (upper-right) > OneDrive settings > More settings.
- Under Can’t find what you are look for, select Return to the old Site settings page.
- Under Site Administration, select Site libraries and lists.
- Locate the library that stores the personal form, and then select Customize "<library name>".
- Under General Settings, select Versioning settings.
- Under Require Check Out > Require documents to be checked out before they can be edited?, select No.
- Select OK.
For a group form stored in a Microsoft 365 group’s SharePoint site:
- Open the SharePoint site for the Microsoft 365 group.
- Open the library that stores the group form.
- Select the Settings icon > Library settings > More library settings.
- Under General Settings, select Versioning settings.
- Under Require Check Out > Require documents to be checked out before they can be edited?, select No.
- Select OK.
After this change, return to Microsoft Forms and reopen the form; it should no longer behave as read-only if the underlying library was the cause.
If the issue persists for all forms, also confirm that Forms is being opened while signed in with the account that owns or has edit permissions on those forms, as described in the basic navigation steps for opening and managing forms.
