Creating a learning Plan on Microsoft Learn requires using a Collection first; content cannot be added directly to a Plan until that Plan exists and is in an editable state.
To create and use a Plan:
- Ensure sign-in
- Sign in to a Microsoft Learn profile. Creating, starting, and completing Plans all require being signed in.
- Create a Collection
- Save the course and any other Learn content into a Collection.
- If a suitable Collection already exists, it can be reused. Otherwise, create a new Collection and add the course to it.
- Convert the Collection to a Plan
- Go to the Collections page in the Learn profile.
- Use the option to copy that Collection to a Plan.
- When the Plan is created, the Collection’s title, description, and section descriptions are copied, and sections become Plan milestones. The original Collection remains unchanged.
- Edit the Plan (before publishing)
- In Plan edit mode, add optional learning outcomes and recommended “days to milestone.”
- Add or remove content, reorder or edit milestones, and move items between milestones.
- Additional Learn content can be added to the Plan by opening the content page, selecting the + icon, choosing the Plans tab, and selecting the target Plan. This works only for unpublished Plans that are still editable.
- Publish and share the Plan
- Once satisfied, finalize and publish the Plan.
- Use Manage > Invite learner to copy a link or send it via email, or create learning groups with unique links.
- After publishing, Plans (per the limitations) cannot be edited, so any content additions must be done before publishing.
- Start or resume the Plan as a learner
- Open the Plan and select Start (sign-in required). If it is not an official Microsoft Plan, consent will be requested to share progress with the Plan creator.
- Later, go to Profile → Plans and select Resume to continue.
If adding the course “to a plan” did not work, typical causes based on this behavior are:
- No Plan exists yet (only a Collection), so the course must first be added to a Collection and then that Collection converted to a Plan.
- The Plan is already published; published Plans cannot be edited, so new content cannot be added.
- Not signed in to a Learn profile when attempting to add content.
