    Hi Alan Duggan,

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum.

Because you’re using new Outlook for Windows, some steps from Q&A Assist (such as Safe Mode or creating a profile via Control Panel) apply to classic Outlook only.

Below are the correct steps for new Outlook, please try them in this order:

    1. Fix new Outlook freezing / “Not responding”

    • Right‑select Start > open Task Manager.
    • Select Microsoft Outlook > End task to fully close the app.
    • Reopen new Outlook and check again.
    • If it still freezes: uninstall and reinstall new Outlook
    • From the Start menu > select new Outlook for Windows → Uninstall.
    • Then reinstall it from the Microsoft Store.

    2. Add/sign in to Gmail in new Outlook

    • In Outlook, go to View > Accounts > Your accounts.
    • Select Add account > enter your Gmail address > Continue.
    • When the Google sign‑in window appears, sign in and on the permissions screen, select Allow.

If the Gmail account already exists but still errors: Go to Accounts > Your accounts > Manage > Remove the Gmail account > close/reopen Outlook > add the account again.

If you see a Google authentication prompt mentioning “redirect_uri / 400,” try setting Google Chrome as your default browser and then adding the account again.

If Gmail is added but you can’t send/receive, try Remove & Add the Gmail account again.

Follow these steps to address both Outlook not responding and the Gmail sign-in error.

    1. Update Outlook to a fixed build
    • The Gmail sign-in issues in classic Outlook have been fixed in recent builds.
    • In Outlook, go to File > Office Account > Update Options > Update Now and let Office update to the latest version.
    • After updating, restart Outlook and try adding the Gmail account again.
    1. Check Gmail IMAP settings Gmail must have IMAP enabled or Outlook will fail to connect.
    • In a browser, sign in at Gmail.com.
    • Select Settings (gear icon) > See all settings.
    • Open the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab.
    • Under IMAP access, select Enable IMAP.
    • Select Save Changes.
    • Back in Outlook, remove the failing Gmail account from Settings/Accounts, then add it again.
    1. If Outlook freezes or is not responding Outlook freezing when opening files or sending mail can be caused by add-ins, antivirus integration, or a corrupted profile.

    Try these in order:

    • Start Outlook in safe mode to rule out add-ins:
      • Close Outlook.
      • Press Windows + R, type outlook.exe /safe, press Enter.
      • If Outlook works in safe mode, disable add-ins from File > Options > Add-ins.
    • If antivirus is integrated with Outlook, disable only the Outlook integration or Outlook add-in from the antivirus settings (do not turn off antivirus completely).
    • Create a new Outlook profile:
      1. Open Control Panel > User Accounts > Mail.
      2. Select Show Profiles.
      3. Select the existing profile and choose Remove (only if mail is stored on the server, not only in local PSTs).
      4. Select Add, give the profile a name.
      5. Add the email account again and complete setup.
    1. If you see Gmail-specific security errors If Outlook reports errors like the app or browser is not secure, or that IMAP cannot be set up, ensure:
    • IMAP is enabled in Gmail (step 2 above).
    • Outlook is updated to a build that includes the Gmail sign-in fix.

If the issue persists after these steps, run the Classic Outlook Advanced Diagnostics troubleshooter from the article on Outlook not responding to automatically check for common causes.
