Hi Paul,
I understand that you would like this feature to be available on iPad however, please note that Mail Merge is not available on iPadOS primarily due to design and platform limitations rather than a feature oversight. Mail Merge relies on several components that are tightly integrated in the desktop version of Word for Windows or Mac, including:
On iPadOS, applications run in a sandboxed environment with restricted file system access and no native support for background tasks or macros in Word, rendering the standard Mail Merge workflow technically infeasible. Essentially, it is a platform limitation stemming from iPadOS security, file access, and multitasking restrictions.
Mail merge is not available in Word on iPadOS. Mail merge features are only documented for Word on Windows, macOS, and Word for the web, and the web version can only preserve existing mail merge settings created on the desktop; it cannot run or edit a mail merge itself.
To use mail merge, Word must connect to a data source (such as Excel, Outlook contacts, or other databases) and, for email merges, to a MAPI‑compatible email client. The documented workflows and supported data sources are provided only for desktop platforms (Windows and macOS). iPadOS is not listed among the supported platforms for creating or executing mail merges, so the functionality is not implemented there.
If mail merge is required, the supported options are:
