Badges and trophies in Microsoft communities can disappear for a few common reasons, depending on which system they came from:

    1. Viva Answers / Viva Engage badges turned off
If the badges were from Answers in Viva and the User Preferences for badges feature is enabled, turning badges off will delete them:
    • From the Achievements and awards page, selecting the ellipses (…) and choosing Turn off answers badges permanently deletes earned Answers badges and makes them no longer visible in Viva Engage.
    • If badges are later turned back on, previously earned badges are not restored and must be earned again.
    1. Profile-card awards and certifications managed at the source
If the badges were awards or certification badges shown on the Microsoft 365 profile card:
    • Badges are managed at the issuing platform, not in Microsoft 365.
    • If visibility was changed or the badge was removed at the source (for example, Credly/Acclaim or another issuing system), it will disappear from the Microsoft 365 profile after the next sync (which can take up to 24 hours or follow the admin’s crawl schedule).
    • Incorrect or missing badges must be fixed at the source or by contacting the tenant administrator.
    1. Community migrations and profile separation
Some legacy community platforms (such as Microsoft Community/Answers) have been merged or redirected into Microsoft Learn Q&A, while others like Microsoft Community Hub remain separate:
    • During migration from Answers to Learn Q&A, only the most helpful and most viewed threads were migrated; other content was archived.
    • Profiles from different communities (Answers, Learn, Tech Community/Community Hub) were not generally merged; only a few members with special roles had profiles mapped.
    • As a result, historical activity and its associated badges may not appear on the current profile, even though the old content is archived rather than actively visible.

    Because of these behaviors:

    • If badges were from Viva Answers, and the “turn off badges” option was used, they cannot be recovered and must be re-earned.
    • If badges were certification/award badges on a profile card, check the issuing platform (for example, Credly/Acclaim or other badge source) and ensure the badge is still issued and visible there, and that the email matches the Entra ID. If something is wrong, contact the tenant administrator.
    • If badges were tied to older Microsoft Community/Answers activity, they may not show on the current Learn or Community Hub profile due to how migration and profile mapping were handled; those specific badges are not restored to the new profile.

    For recovery or confirmation:

    • Verify whether badges still exist and are visible on the original issuing platform (for certifications/awards).
    • If using Viva Answers, check whether badges were turned off in Achievements and awards; if so, they are deleted and must be re-earned.
    • If this relates to older Microsoft Community/Answers activity, be aware that not all content and profile data (including badges) were migrated, and separate profiles (Learn vs Community Hub) are expected.
