A family of Microsoft spreadsheet software with tools for analyzing, charting, and communicating data.
To make the Freeze Panes button work when it is grayed out in Excel for Microsoft 365, switch the workbook to Normal view first.
- Open the workbook in Excel.
- Go to the View tab on the ribbon.
- In the Workbook Views group, click Normal.
- Still on the View tab, the Freeze Panes options should now be enabled:
- Click Freeze Top Row to lock the first row, or
- Click Freeze First Column to lock the first column, or
- Select the cell below and to the right of what needs to stay visible, then click Freeze Panes.
If the Freeze commands remain disabled after switching to Normal view, an administrator policy or file protection mode may be disabling some ribbon commands; in that case, contact the administrator for the device or Microsoft 365 account.
