I tried to download Skype and I was completely disappointed that the only link that was official brought me to Microsoft Teams. I couldn't even log in to "SkYpE fOr bUSinEss" now, because I need to be part of an organization or school... This is ridiculous. When will your greed end, Microsoft?

    Dear @Rose,

Welcome to Microsoft Q&A Forum and I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience.

I understand this change is frustrating, and I want to clarify what’s happening based on Microsoft’s official announcement and the Q&A Assist AI also stated some information about it for you.

Consumer Skype has been retired as of May 5, 2025. This applies to both free and paid Skype users. Skype is no longer available as a standalone consumer product.

Skype for Business is not retired, but it is an organization-only product and requires a work or school account to sign in.

For former consumer Skype users, Microsoft’s supported option is Microsoft Teams Free, which allows you to sign in using your existing Skype credentials and migrate chats and contacts automatically. If you do not wish to use Teams Free, Microsoft also provides an option to export your Skype data.

Please note that this is a peer‑to‑peer support forum. Microsoft Q&A moderators like myself, as well as other community members, share guidance based on personal experience and publicly available information. Due to security and privacy protocols, we do not have access to your internal environment and are unable to change design of the product. Our role is to help guide the discussion and connect you with relevant and helpful resources. I truly appreciate your patience and understanding in this situation.

While community moderators can help explain the change and supported options, we do not control product lifecycle decisions. If you strongly disagree with this direction or want Microsoft to review your concerns, the appropriate channel is the Microsoft Feedback Portal, where product teams actively review customer input: https://feedbackportal.microsoft.com/feedback/

Sharing your experience helps Microsoft prioritize feature improvements in this scenario. Once you submit your feedback there, other users and I can locate your post and vote for it, which increases your visibility and priority to the product team. And I appreciate you raising this issue. Your action can help others in our community who face the same concern.

I hope this clarification helps align expectations and provides you some insights in this concern. Wish you a pleasant day!

Skype (consumer) is being retired and is no longer available as a standalone product, and Skype for Business Online has already been replaced by Microsoft Teams as the primary client for meetings and calling in Microsoft 365.

Key points from the current Microsoft plans:

    1. Skype consumer retirement and Teams Free
    • Skype is no longer supported and is being retired in May 2025.
    • Users are encouraged to move to Microsoft Teams Free for personal and small group use.
    • To start using Teams Free:
      1. Download Microsoft Teams from the official Microsoft Teams website.
      2. Sign in with existing Skype credentials.
      3. Existing Skype chats and contacts are available in Teams Free.
    • A how-to guide is available to help users move from Skype to Microsoft Teams Free and learn the new experience.
    1. Skype for Business and Microsoft 365
    • Skype for Business Online capabilities have been brought into Microsoft Teams, which is now the primary client for messaging, meetings, and calling in Office 365/Microsoft 365.
    • New Office 365 customers (fewer than 500 seats) have not received Skype for Business Online since October 1, 2018; they are expected to use Teams.
    • Skype for Business Server remains for specific on-premises needs, but organizations are encouraged to adopt Teams for collaboration.
    1. What this means for signing in
    • Skype for Business (work/school) now requires an organizational (work or school) account; it is not intended for personal consumer use.
    • For personal communication, Microsoft’s supported path is Microsoft Teams Free rather than Skype or Skype for Business.
    1. Feedback and alternatives
    • Microsoft explicitly states that Skype is no longer supported and recommends exploring Microsoft Teams Free and its benefits.
    • Feedback about this transition can be submitted using the in-app feedback options in Teams.
    • For Microsoft 365 Personal and Family subscribers, Skype minutes are being removed starting March 2026, and group calling scenarios are expected to use Microsoft Teams Free instead.

In short, the behavior seen (being directed to Teams instead of Skype, and needing an organization to use Skype for Business) is the result of Microsoft’s completed transition from Skype/Skype for Business to Microsoft Teams for both consumer and business scenarios.
