If your drive is encrypted with Bitlocker, the only place the Bitlocker Recovery key is automatically stored is on the associated Microsoft account on the link below, there is no method available for anyone else to find the account used on your PC, be sure to check any Microsoft account that may have been used on the PC and also any work or school account that may be linked to the PC.

Are you able to find the Bitlocker Recovery Key on any account that may have been used or linked to the laptop?

If not, do you have a safe backup of your files, or use a cloud service like OneDrive to sync your files online.

If you are unable to find the Bitlocker Recovery Key on any account that may have been used on that device, then I am sorry for the bad news, a Windows reset will not work on an encrypted drive, the only way to access that device is to create a bootable Windows 11 USB on another working PC and use that to clean install Windows and at the start of the installation, delete all partitions on the drive to remove the encryption, which will sadly result in loss of all data on the drive.

BitLocker needs the 48‑digit recovery key to unlock the drive. If that key can’t be found, there’s no way to bypass it or unlock the data, even by Microsoft support.

Use these steps to look for the key in all possible locations:

    1. Check Microsoft accounts
The key might be saved to a Microsoft account, even if it wasn’t obvious during setup (for example, if Windows was set up by someone else or in a store).
      • From another device, go to https://aka.ms/myrecoverykey.
      • Sign in with every Microsoft account that might have been used (personal, work, school, old accounts).
      • Look for a key whose Key ID matches the first 8 digits shown on the BitLocker recovery screen.
    2. Check work or school account (if ever used)
If the device was ever joined to an organization (work/school):
      • From another device, go to https://aka.ms/aadrecoverykey.
      • Sign in with the work or school account.
      • Go to Devices, expand the device, and select View BitLocker Keys.
    3. Check other common backup locations
When BitLocker was turned on, the key could have been saved in one of these places:
      • A printout (paper copy) kept with other PC documents.
      • A USB flash drive (look for a .txt file with the key on any USB drives you own, using another PC).
    4. If the key cannot be found
      • If the device is managed by an organization, contact its IT support to retrieve the key.
      • If the key is not in any Microsoft account, not printed, not on a USB drive, and not held by an organization, it cannot be recovered by anyone, including Microsoft Support. BitLocker is designed this way to protect the data.
      • In that case, the only way to use the PC again is to reset or clean‑install Windows, which will erase all data on the encrypted drive. Use the Windows recovery options from installation media to perform a reset/clean install.

There is no supported method to discover “which email” was used from the BitLocker screen alone. The only option is to systematically try all possible Microsoft accounts and locations listed above.
