How do I update the email sending limit from my laptop. I tried to send a group e-mail with 51 email addresses and received an error message. I should be able to send up to 5000 daily.

Please advise

    Hi, I'm John!

This can happen if the system detects unusual activity, or if your account hasn’t been fully verified.

If you haven't already, the best place to start is making sure your account is fully verified, check that your security info (like your phone number or alternate email) is up to date at https://account.microsoft.com Once that’s done, the limits often lift within 24 hours.

For more detailed guidance please see "How can I increase sending limits?" section here: https://support.microsoft.com/office/sending-limits-in-outlook-com-279ee200-594c-40f0-9ec8-bb6af7735c2e

I really hope this information is helpful! Let me know if you have any further questions or concerns.

    Regards,

    John J.D.

The sending limit cannot be changed from the laptop or Outlook app. It is enforced by the email service (Outlook.com / Exchange Online), not by the local device.

    For Outlook.com (personal Microsoft account):

    • Outlook.com limits how many messages and recipients can be sent to protect against spam.
    • For Microsoft 365 subscribers, typical limits are:
      • Up to 5,000 recipients per day
      • Up to 500 recipients per message
      • 25 MB maximum attachment size per message
    • New or low‑reputation accounts may have lower temporary limits until credibility is established. These limits cannot be overridden from the client.

For Exchange Online / Microsoft 365 work or school accounts:

    • There is an organization limit of 500 recipients per message in Exchange Online and Microsoft 365, and this cannot be modified.
    • The overall per‑message recipient limit is controlled by the service’s transport configuration, not by Outlook on the laptop.

Practical options when hitting recipient limits:

    1. Reduce the number of recipients in a single message (for example, send to fewer than the enforced per‑message limit and split the group into multiple emails).
    2. Use a distribution group or Microsoft 365 group so that the group counts as a single recipient while delivering to many people.
    3. If using Outlook.com and the account is new, send normally for some time to build reputation; the quota will automatically increase to the normal maximum.

There is no supported way to raise these limits directly from the laptop; they are service‑side protections.
