How to lock ribbon customizations to prevent automatic ribbon modifications in outlook

I am using Microsoft Office Outlook classic. The ribbon is overloaded with excess garbage menus that I never use. All of this bloated mess makes using the ribbon much harder and more time-consuming. I successfully customize my ribbon to my needs, but then it spontaneously reverts to the junked-up mess. I have customized it and lost my customizations about five times in the last two days. I need to lock my ribbon customizations so that they are retained when software updates get pushed.

    Hi @Huntwork, Matthew (US),

Thank you for reaching out regarding the ribbon customization behavior in Outlook Classic.

After reviewing your description, the response provided by the Q&A Assist appears to accurately reflect the current capabilities of Outlook. At this time, Outlook does not offer a supported option to lock ribbon customizations so that they are preserved across updates. The recommended approach is to export your customized ribbon configuration and re‑import it if the layout is reset.

For guidance to export and import customized ribbons, please refer to: Customize the ribbon in Office - Microsoft Support (at the “Share a customized ribbon with another user or another computer” section).

I completely understand how important this can be, and it’s a situation many others may run into as well. Outlook does not provide a way to “lock” ribbon customizations against change, but it does support exporting and re‑importing a customized ribbon so that it can be quickly restored if it is reset by an update or other issue.

To protect and restore a customized ribbon in Outlook for Windows:

    1. Open Outlook and go to File → Options → Customize Ribbon.
    2. Configure the ribbon as desired (add/remove tabs, groups, and commands).
    3. In the Customize the Ribbon window, select Import/Export → Export all customizations.
    4. Save the exported customization file to a safe location.

If Outlook later reverts to the default ribbon:

    1. Go back to File → Options → Customize Ribbon.
    2. Select Import/Export → Import customization file.
    3. Choose the previously saved file and confirm.

Note: Importing a customization file replaces any current ribbon and Quick Access Toolbar customizations, so export again if new changes are made.

If the ribbon is repeatedly reverting, also avoid using Reset → Reset all customizations in the same dialog, as this will clear the custom layout and Quick Access Toolbar back to defaults.
