Use classic Outlook’s own account setup and troubleshooting, independent of new Outlook.

    1. Start classic Outlook and add the account
      1. In classic Outlook, select File > Info > Add Account.
      2. Enter the email address.
      3. Select Advanced options and check Let me set up my account manually.
      4. Select the correct account type (typically POP or IMAP for third‑party providers).
      5. Enter the account password when prompted and select Connect.
    2. If automatic setup fails
      1. When the setup error appears, select Change Account Settings.
      2. Enter the incoming and outgoing server names, ports, and encryption exactly as provided by the email provider or from the POP and IMAP server name reference.
      3. Select Connect, then Done.
Note: Manual setup in classic Outlook is not supported for Microsoft 365 or Exchange accounts unless using POP/IMAP and only if the admin has enabled POP/IMAP access.
    3. If classic Outlook never prompts for a password (IMAP accounts)
      1. On the IMAP settings page, ensure Require logon using Secure Password Authentication (SPA) is unchecked.
      2. If still not prompted:
        1. Open Control Panel in Windows.
        2. Select Mail > Email Accounts….
        3. On the Email tab, select New.
        4. Enter name, email address, and password in both Password fields, then select Next.
        5. Complete the on‑screen steps; enter the password again if prompted.
        6. When setup completes, select Finish.
    4. If using Gmail, Yahoo, iCloud, or other providers Some providers require changes on their website (for example, enabling IMAP or generating an app password) before adding the account. Follow the provider‑specific guidance (for example, “Add a Gmail account to Outlook” or “Add or manage an iCloud email account in Outlook”) and then repeat the steps above in classic Outlook.

If the account is a Microsoft account (Outlook.com/Hotmail/Live) and messages/folders do not sync correctly in classic Outlook, ensure the correct account type is used (for example, Outlook.com rather than Exchange or Microsoft 365).
