Microsoft certification exams use scaled scoring, so the number of questions answered correctly does not translate directly to a percentage score. Technical exams, including PL-300, are scored on a scale from 1 to 1,000, and a passing score is 700 or greater. Because the passing score is based on both the skills being measured and the difficulty of the specific set of questions received, a simple “correct out of total questions” calculation cannot be used to validate the reported result.
There is no penalty for guessing, and some questions may be unscored (used for exam quality improvement). These unscored items are not identified during the exam, so all questions should be treated as if they count toward the score.
If there is a belief that the score is inaccurate, there is a formal score challenge process. A candidate has 15 days after taking the exam to challenge the score. To do this, use the support channel described in the Certification Exam Candidate Agreement: submit a score challenge request via the Microsoft Credentials Support page. Microsoft will review the case; however, the final result of an exam is rarely changed. When an item is found to be flawed, Microsoft cannot assume it would have been answered correctly, and instead may offer a free retake rather than changing the score.
For future attempts, use the score report’s section-level feedback to identify weaker skill areas and prepare with the official PL-300 study resources and practice assessments listed in the study guide.
